NCTC ADN Fall 2012

U.S.A. Texas

Anyone applying for the Fall 2012 semester at North Central Texas College for the ADN program? I went up to Gainesville yesterday and applied! I'm pretty excited because I didn't realize until mid-March that I would qualify prerequisite-wise to apply for any programs for Fall, so it was a pleasant surprise. :)

There is no med term course specifically. I learned a lot via A&P 1 and 2 and micro and also had some previous knowledge from a course in high school (7 years ago!). If you are worried about it, I would get a medical terminology book or workbook and review it to brush up. :)

I'm one of those people who keeps every book, so I still have mine, thankfully! :) I will definitely review... especially if I am accepted! (fingers crossed!) :D

Hi Zweiells! I was just curious how the first semester has been going at NCTC? Unfortunately I was unable to apply for spring, so I'm planning for next fall. Hope all is well!

The first half of first semester has gone by fast! I'm not even sure where to start with information for you. I think it's been a rollercoaster for everyone. Good days and bad days. There is a lot of reading and a lot of little assignments, so it's easy to get bogged down. The biggest issue for a lot of us has been time management. To get by in this program (and any other program), you just have to dedicate enough time for everything and try hard not to get behind. Attitude has been a big factor too. Staying positive will get you through a lot. Flexibility helps too. Sometimes dates/times/tests/meetings get switched around, so the more flexible you are the easier it is to deal with. I hope this doesn't scare you, I just want to be honest! Any program will have ups and downs; the best thing is to realize that and prepare for it. I think all nursing students regardless of their program go through this. There will be days that you want to drop out and there will be days that make you go "This is why I want to be a nurse!"

Hi, Zweiells. I'm Oneita from class. What's your first name. And Ashley, everything Zweiells said is SO TRUE!"

Hey Oneita. I'm Allison, the one who just got married!

Ok lol! I always wanted to know who you were and CONGRATS again!!

Thank you ladies for the responses!! And don't worry, you haven't scared me yet :) I am ready for the challenge! So ready to get into a nursing program! Good luck to you throughout the rest of the semester!

So another question-have you started any clinicals or sim labs yet? If so, how are they going? I am so curious!! :)

I had written you a nice long reply a few days ago, but it didn't go through!

We started actual clinicals in September, so we've done about 6 weeks so far. It is going well for me. The first two weeks I was terrified and was wondering what I had gotten myself into. It's just overwhelming at first being in a new environment practicing new tasks. After the 3rd week, I grew more comfortable and had a routine down so it's been better each week.

Most of the semester is at a nursing home performing basic patient care (e.g. bed baths, showers, toileting, feeding, making beds, etc.). Sometimes there is an opportunity to use skills learned in the skills class. Each set of clinical partners gets to go to a small, local hospital at least once during the semester. I went this past week and really enjoyed learning more about working in a hospital setting. There is more opportunity to use skills there, as the acuity is higher than at the nursing home.

Sim lab we do in a few weeks. We are just now at the point where we have learned enough information and skills for sim lab to be beneficial. Sim lab is utilized more in subsequent semesters.

I just found out I was accepted for Spring 2013 (the official letter hasn't come but they called because they thought I had been arrested and didn't fill out some form but I have never been arrested) but I am really excited and scared. I live in Keller so the drive is about 45 minutes but I am used to driving to Dallas for work so this isn't bad. It was nice to read your response and find out what my first semester will be like:)

Congrats! First day of classes will be here before you know it. Let me know if you have any questions.

You may find that there is another classmate who lives near you that you can carpool with. A lot of students now carpool whenever possible and it really helps with long, boring drives and gas costs!
