Moving to Dallas area. How many patients you get on a tele floor.

Hi, I am thinking to move to Dallas. I heard Rn gets like 7-8 patients daily in Texas. Is this true? Thank you very much. Ken

I think it depends on the hospital. I've seen 5-6:1 for tele floor and 3-4:1 on tele PCU floors.

In Arizona, I have 4 patients daily on a tele floor. I get 5 patients about once a month. Thanks. Ken.

I've worked at several different Dallas hospitals as agency on tele. At the best place I had 6 tele patients every time. At the worst place I had 7, sometimes 8 on tele.

Arizona has better RN patient ratio. Do you have more nurse aids? One nurse aid has about 15 patient in my dept. I have 4 patients daily as RN. But Ariozona summer is very impressive. 115 F is norm here.

Summers in the Dallas area are rather impressive too, so you will not be escaping the summer heat by moving here. The outside temperatures reached 106 degrees on this past Saturday and Sunday. The Dallas area has had 20+ days of summer where the outside temperatures have exceeded 100 degrees. The only difference is that Texas heat is slightly more humid than Arizona's dry heat.

In addition, have you researched the pay rates here? People are usually shocked to learn they'll be earning less money when they decide to move here.

I didn't know Texas nurses get less paid. In Arizona, with 3.5 years experience, I get paid about 29.20 per hr, plus overtime is 1.5 and $180 bonus per shift. Thank you. Ken

I have many years on you and I have never made more than your hourly wage except as agency/prn without benefits here in TX.

Everyone says that the cost of living is low in TX but I was shocked to move to the DFW area and find the cost of living with utilities/food/property tax was double or more than what I paid in central TX while the wages were lower than I was accustomed to.

As far as aides - the aides that I had assigned to me had 10-20 pts depending on the unit and the hospital. It did not help me to manage the patients any better. My best help came when I was "stuck" with the nursing students that the other nurses didn't want. Give me a nursing student any day. They were the only way that I survived some of those places in Dallas.

Texas nurses should do something to request for better pay and working condition. Sounds like it is rough to be a nurse in Dallas area.

Amen! You are preaching to the choir!

Is nurse working condition in Houston area any better? Thank you.

I know of nurses who work in Houston's Texas Medical Center, which is a massive complex of different hospitals, and most of them love it. The pay in Houston tends to be very competitive based on the responses I've seen in these forums. A person with your level of experience could probably fetch in the high 20s per hour, at least $27 or $28. In addition, the cost of living in and around Houston is dirt cheap due to the depressed housing market. Although Houston is definitely not as hot as Arizona, it is more humid.

One regular poster from Houston was recently claiming he receives 5 patients on his med/surg floor every shift, and 4 to 5 patients on telemetry.
