Help! Need more CEUs for license renewal

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Got the dreaded letter saying I am being audited before my Jan 07 renewal date - and must provide evidence of 20 ceu's in the past 2 years.

Not realizing that CONTACT HOURS are not the same as CEU'S - I'm a bit behind and am needing to add a bunch more.

I have contacted the BNE about a certification course I studied for, sat for and passed - asking how I document that - and they've not responded.

Does anybody have Type 2 CEU's or advice on how to count that type of stuff?

Does books, literature, etc count?

200 contact hours of the type one variety is getting tiresome.

Thanks for any ideas or help!

Not sure about your question, but you can get free CEU's (have to register for free) here: Nurses CE - Medscape

Please refer to the BNE link below. It describes the calculation of CEUs and contact hours. (And it's 20 by the way, not 200...Was that a typo?) It also gives information related to Type I and Type II continuing education.

CEU

Also, the link at the bottom of the above webpage provides extra specifics regarding what is accepted, what is not, etc.

Don't forget about the 2 hours of Bioterrorism that are required with this renewal!

Medscape is a great site and does provide free continuing education. Also try Nursing Spectrum. I'm not sure about their fees though.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice! And I did remember the bioterrorism needs and have already done that.

I really worded my original question wrong.

It does take 200 contact hours to provide 20 CEU's - not a typo. 10 contact hour equals 1 CEU. Of course you don't spend nearly that length of time on each subject you do - but those are referred to as Type I.

What I wanted to know is suggestions for Type II - and was asking for other's advice on what they might have done to satisfy the Type II.

I'll go back to the BNE and request again the information they are not providing. I have gotten most of my contact hours through medscape nursing and many through an oncology group. Thanks for the idea on nursing spectrum.

from the board site:

twenty (20) contact hours (two continuing education units) of continuing education are required every two years and coincides with the nurse's license renewal. a contact hour is defined as 50 minutes of a clock hour. a continuing education unit (ceu) equals 10 contact hours.

from your post:

it does take 200 contact hours to provide 20 ceu's - not a typo. 10 contact hour equals 1 ceu.

you wrote that 10 contact hours equals 1 ceu...that means that 20 contact hours equals 2 ceu.

the texas bne requires twenty contact hours, not ceu (continuing education units). the contact hour is the recognized measure according to tna and the ancc.

as far as type ii items...if you've attended workshops accredited for physicians, pharmacists, dieticians, therapists, etc, they can count as long as nurses were included on the target audience. (check flyers, brochures or contact the sponsor for that information.) you can also count it if you've developed/presented inservices or other presentations for a nursing audience. certain health-related college courses can be accpeted as type ii. remember though...these things must meet the bne's definition of continuing education. that second link i mentioned provides a list of things that are and are not considered continuing education.

my advice is to get online and do 20 hours of type i. it's the most readily available and you can't go wrong with something that says "this activity provided xxx contact hours of continuing nursing education". (according to tna contacts i have, type ii ce will eventually go the way of the dinosaur.)

i'm curious that you received an audit letter prior to your renewal. others i've known received them in the months after they renewed!
