Galveston

U.S.A. Texas

Hello everyone from Texas! Can any of you give me information about Galveston? Meaning climate, job outlook, anything basically. How far is it from Houston, Dallas, etc.... I was looking at one of the Texas newspapers (I'm from Michigan, not yet a nurse) and came across an add for UTMB Health, and they had alot of nursing positions open, but it looks like places in Huntsville, Dickson, Beeville, etc. Are these places close to Galveston? Does Galveston have alot of rain. Just curios, thanks! I'm just doing some research on Texas locations to move to. My first choice would be Houston or Dallas where I have family, but when I become a nurse, I wanna go where I can find a job so I don't want to limit myself.

Hey Sirena922! Galveston is about 1-1 1/2hrs away from Houston, but Im not sure what the commute would be like in the morning. The climate is much like Houston (very humid) & it is more prone to hurricanes during hurricane season. Dallas is about 5 1/2hrs north of Houston. I dont know anything about the job outlook, but Ive seen that ad for UTMB Health and theyre for corrections facilities (which is a field I'd prefer not to work in). Hope this helps :)!

UTMB in Galveston is still trying to ramp back up after being devastated by Hurricaine Ike. That storm caused enormous damage and closed UTMB operations. It was actually questionable for a while as to whether the hospital would be re-opened. By the time it was decided to re-open, all the unemployed people had found other jobs so they have been scrambling to hire since then. I don't have specific details, but the 'new' UTMB is nowhere near the size of the original (pre-Ike) operation. That sort of thing is off-putting to a lot of people... they don't want to work for a place that seems to be so vulnerable both terms of funding & mother nature.

Galveston is a unique city with tons of historical significance. However, living 'on the island' has its challenges. It would probably be better for you to actually visit and get to know the area before deciding to relocate. You may want to split the difference and look at communities between Galveston and Houston... like League City or the Clear Lake area.

Thx you. I don't want to live on an Island that has hurricanes. I'll look more into Houston where my family lives.
