Hello i was wondering if there are any students in the ADN program at Houston Community College. I just wanted to know how the program is and what to expect for the first semester. Also is there and thing that I can do over the summer to prepare for the first semester. Thanks, any comments would be greatly appreciated.:flowersfo

Congrats on getting accepted! I am in the program right now. The first semester is kind of a blur LOL. It was a bit unorganized for us, but maybe it is better now. Just spend time with your family and enjoy the time off. Don't get behind on reading assignments and you will be fine. The information isn't bad the first semester. What book are they using for foundations? The study guide was very helpful to do before exams. Get yourself an NCLEX book and go over questions (for the topic you are covering) right before the test. Lippinicott, Prentice Hall and Mosby all have supplement books you can use if you prefer. I specifically love my nclex book b/c its comprehensive and it covers everything! You can purchase all your needs from Majors bookstore in the med. center. They are a bit pricey for me. I try to order ahead of time from amazon or half.com. After that you will probably go into the peds/ob semester right? Or are you doing mental health?

Thanks for your help. I dont start til the fall semester, I already ordered the fundamentals of nursing text and the study guide from Amazon. Do you have a NCLEX that you would recommend, that is a good one. If there is anything that you can think of that may be of help I am open to all suggestions.

I use the prentice hall review and rationales nclex book. I actually went to the bookstore and just browsed thru each one to see which I like over the other. I would also take time to compare the careplan books out there. They recommend a specific one and you dont have to get that one. There's a few out there, and again it just depends on which style your prefer.

Ok so i will just go to the book store and browse through a few. I have a question about the med-surg book do you have 1 book or the 2 volume set.

I have the 2 volume set; you will need them for careplans for the pathophysiology portion. Tip: once you get the book...login to thepoint and setup access to your books. when you start your careplans you can browse the books online and copy and past the patho. Such a huge time saver!!! Oh yeah, use thepoint for their nclex questions! :)

I was thinking about getting the 2 volume set. Wow thanks, i want to get a head start on my reading thanks so much you are so helpful. Do they do the team teaching in the program too?

Yes! I didn't have a team of teachers for my pharm class.

Have Ms. Grant came back yet. I dont really care for the team teaching, because some people are just not that good at teaching, then i feel like i have to teach my self. I am just ready to get this started. WHat semester are you in? Have you took Ped's already?

I just did pedi the first 8 weeks of the current semester. I am taking OB right now and after pedi it is pretty much a breeze. I am taking mental health this summer and off to med-surg 1 and management this fall. Ms. Grant is back, but not full-time. Just enjoyed her in peds. She is awesome :) !! BUT hard, lol. When did you take pharm?

I took it this fall, at North Harris. I passed Hcc Math test with a 97%. I was a little nervous at first but it was pretty easy. Yea I like Ms. Grant. So was Ped's really had like they say it is?

Yes, I thought so. I think its the hardest semester because everything is thrown at you and you are expected to know it all in 8 weeks! It's very intense. Out of about 70 about 30 or so passed. Not sure on the exact #, but half of the people are gone now. It is very doable though. Don't get caught up in all the negativity and you will be just fine. Just know its hard and do what you have to do to pass... :) I am not sure why so many failed. Could be a # of reasons.
