Becoming a Nursing Student

hi, everyone!

happy sunday! i'm not a nurse but have been following your board and i'm very interested in entering a nursing program. however, needing advice/direction and thought this the best place to try.

i have no experience in healthcare whatsoever; i've never worked in a doctor's office and i know no one who's a nurse or involved in a healthcare profession. i guess the first question, then, should probably be how can i know if i'll do well enough in this profession to abandon the one i'm in now?? (which shows promise...it's just not very interesting.) i'm a motived/hands-on/energetic kinda person...i just need the right direction to send all that energy and i'm thinking (a lot here lately) that nursing may be it. i'm a 'people person' and prefer dealing with people that i can see and speak with directly and i want to do something that i think is important. and, while business is important (which is what i'm in now, by the way), it's not important...('so what'd you do with your life?? uh, i learned to file and worked really hard on bid documents!' yuck...) what made you want to be a nurse?? how long did it take you?? have you regretted your choice?? could you suggest some programs??

i currently live in smyrna, tn if that's make any difference. any information or words of wisdom/advice would be great.

Hi Smile, It sounds like you have the motivation to become a nurse. However, i am not a nurse either,but i am a student. I am attending school in Knoxville. I am going to get a bachelors degree in nursing. Most nursing programs last three years. I know that sounds like forever, but so far my first month has flew by and am really enjoying it. You just need to have an interest in health care and giving back to the community. My best advice set your goals and really think about what you enjoy before applying to college.:rotfl:

congrads on going to nursing school. I am a senior at UT martin although my BS degree isnt in nursing.

Ironically! at first thought , I didnt want to be a nurse..I farmed and was one of Ms's first EMT's in 1972 lol (I'm old). Another EMT said he was going to start nursing school and did i want to join him. I replied, "No way in heck would i be a male nurse, I was a farmer" but times as they were i went to an ADN program. I went untill the last semester and had to quit due to bad spring weather and my farming operation. Still had no idea i would become a nurse. I found out i could take a challenge exam for LPN and passed. i started nursing at a small hospital ER. I ended up working ERs for the next 25 years ( and the farm went downhill in 1983) i honestly enjoy the field of nursing. I love people and those years in the ER helped me develop good people skills. I afirm all those wishing to go to school for nursing

Nursing has been a great field for me. I have no real complaints. I have decided to change career fields after 25 years of nursing and EMT. Nursing allowed me the flexibility ro return to school while being a single father...I have got some tips on surviving school that have helped me....If you will go to one of my previous posts, you will find an article that includes these tips

hey smile, sounds like you r really into the idea of becoming a nurse. I am not a nurse but am a sophomore at worcester State college in MA i know it is far from where u r but it is a 4 yr bachlor program and it goes by so fast, it feels like just last year i was taking stupid classes i was never going to use and now i am starting clinical in the fall and it is definately worth it. I think that u should go for it b/c the hardest part os convincing ur self and it sounds like u have already done that so now all you need to do is act on it...GOOD LUCK
