Which NC ICUs are adequate?

I would like to hear from those of you accepted out of North Carolina hospitals. Most CRNA programs would like for their prospective students to get their critical care experience in a high acuity hospital. What does that mean?

I know nurses who work at level 1 centers have no problems with that requirement. However, there must be plenty other hospitals which provide enough experience for nurses to get accepted. Which hospitals besides a level 1 facility have you been accepted from? I would imagine New Hanover (Wilmington) is fine. I read in another post that a few from Cape Fear Valley in Fayetteville were accepted. Are there any military or VA hospitals I can work in?

The reason I am asking is because I would hate to work in an ICU for years only to find out that I needed one with a higher acuity. Please, please, please answer this question. It is very important.

In my class at ECU those that came from Level 1 or 2 came from the following hospitals: Wake Med Raleigh (1), Pitt Co. Memorial (3) UNC-Chapel Hill (1) Moses Cone (1) CMC Charlotte (2)

The others are from Cape Fear Valley (1) Southeastern Reg. Med Ctr.(1) Craven (1), One from Utah not sure type of hospital.

The majority have come from the highest acutity.

I don't think that VA hosptials are typically level 1 and I am not to familar with the acuity of care they provide in their units.

I agree with the OP, I think the level 1 centers will give you a lot of exposure. I have worked for level 1 and some smaller hospitals. I currently work for CMC charlotte and some of their step downs would be like the ICUs of smaller hospitals. I am no where near ready for CRNA school but I do have an interest in it. I'm starting with the stepdowns and cardiac units first, just because I want to make sure its what I like. If I do, I'm certain I will join CMC's Dickson Heart unit or CVRU. Chapel Hill is really great too from what other nurses have told me. Good Luck
