Someone told me that SD only has a few approved online schools

I am about to start chamberlains FNP school in November. I was talking with a coworker yesterday and she said that South Dakota only has a few non South Dakota schools approved for licensur based on clinical . I called the board and they said that as long as it's accredited then I shouldn't have problems.... But she did tell me I should email a diff lady with these questions. The one I talked to said she deals with licensure to sd..... If you have graduated from an accredited college AND passed boards they would never deny you licensure (so this makes me think that the clinical a portion is not a concern like my friend says.) Do other states have this restriction? I am pretty sure I covered my bases but not I'm stressed over the weekend until I get an answer... Ugh sorry for rambling! Hope I'm making sense... thanks! ~b. Someone had told me the same about MN but I found out the same as you....as long as the program is accredited and accepted by the certifying bodies, the state board couldn't care less...

My state does care. They will not licensure you if you did not go to an approved school and had clinicals within the state. The BON must approve any school that plans on holding clinicals in the state (whether the student is responsible for finding their own preceptors or not). There are about 15 approved online graduate nursing schools. You can also get in trouble with the BON in you have clinicals without their permission.

They do make the information very easy to find on the BON's website though. The BON is very involved with the education of nurses at every level. Unlike many states, admitted students must pass the BON's background check and get permission before starting clinicals. (The upside is that I won't have to go through a background check again when I graduate.)

Miiki......i wish our BON was that transparent! I had to read 4 pages of bylaws to find the sentence that said "must be an approved school". I knew it would have to be accredited (obviously) but had to find that sentence THEN call them and speak with them to find out what approved meant. I found out that they must register w/ the secretary of state as a business of SD. The faculty member in "charge" of me during clinicals must have a SD license, a compact license, or hold multi-state licensure (with sd or a compact state).....Illinois is not a compact state, so it would have to be a multi-state lic. holder. Chamberlain says that they have been ok'd by SD/SD BON to allow students to apply to chamberlain. SD BON says that Chamberlain is not an approved school. The school is trying to get it straightened out and give me a final answer this week. Its a paperwork overlook on one end or another, I'm just glad they are working to fix it! They assure me that they will not let a paperwork issue prevent me from legally going to school...

Hi BeeGeeRN, did you happen to find out anymore information on the approval of Chamberlain's FNP program and SD BON? I have recently accepted to start the program in January and hoping there's no issue with becoming a FNP in SD through Chamberlain's program. :o

Did they bring this up to you? I was adamant that they call ALL SD students to tell them what's going on... Anyway, I kept getting told that they "haven't heard " a reply from the state of sd. (They submitted all missing paperwork to the state) finally my husband emailed the state and said all was approved by nov 1st, ugh! I don't know why chamberlain is not aware yet. I emailed then and they said I could register for classes for jan (had to w/draw from nov classes grrrr) so I'm starting in January with you!! Are you In sf?

Sorry for the late response! No, they did not bring this up, I had not talked to them about this yet. I was just doing some research of my own :) I am glad to hear that there are no issues though. Excited to start in January to see how this goes. Yes I am in SF.

Hey NV.... i'm in SF also. I work at Sanford in the Cath lab (was at aver before that in ICU) we should meet for coffee when school is going! So...a couple of things i wanted to update you on....Everything is ready to go with SD and Chamberlain. Now there is a person at Sanford that actually PLACES FNP students to a clinical preceptor. This is a huge relief to me bc even though i have some connections in mind for clinicals....they may have already commitments for other students. This person (through Center for Learning) will place you in the correct setting and track you through school. If you have a connection for a preceptor then you just tell her, she does the paperwork (or at least helps you) and then makes sure that the preceptor is still available and pairs you that way. This placement person will be mighty handy if stuff falls through I think. She said they place 100+ students each semester (which is why her position was created!) bc the offices at both hospital (avera/sanford) were getting flooded and it was getting too crazy she said. I will appreciate her placement when it comes to Peds clinicals. the only connection i have is a specialty :-/ Anyway.....Avera has this same type of person of that group....i don't know the name yet, but i figure if i can stay at Sanford, that will work.....I'll find her name later. Also, each school has to fill out paperwork for an "affiliation agreement" for the hospital. Chamberlain has it already for non FNP students (msn with the education route)...they are currently working on amending and including FNP students on that agreement. I haven't checked avera yet.

Thank you BeeGeeRN for all that info!! I really appreciate it. I am so happy to hear that there is a designated person to help us with preceptor placement. What a huge relief as I do not have many connections. I currently work on the Rehab unit. (about 2 yrs). We should definitely meet up for coffee. What are your hours like? I work 64 hrs, but also do another job at Universal Peds. It is so nice to be able to go through a program with someone else and help eachother out in person! I have another friend who is doing this program with me, and she recently moved to Texas :( But we can all work together and support eachother. Can you message me your email and we can communicate that way? I don't know how to PM anyone on here as I am very new to this site. Hope to hear from you soon!
