Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Hello! I am considering applying to direct entry PMHNP programs and would like more information on the career. I haven't been able to find any psychiatric nurse practitioners to shadow, so I'm hoping someone currently working as a PMHNP can answer my questions.

- What settings do PMHNP's typically work in? Searching online, alot of the job listings seem to be in community mental health settings or inpatient facilities. Currently I work in an academic medical center in research, and I really like this setting. Are jobs readily available for PMHNP's in this setting?

- Do you find that your work allows for creativity? Or does it tend to get routine/repetitive over time?

- Do you have positive relationships with your coworkers (I enjoy a cooperative team environment)? Is the job isolating at all? Is there any tension given the hierarchy in the medical field?

- During school: Was there a sense of community in your NP program? I know in some programs the coursework can be completed part time or online, and also people come into this career path from all different backgrounds. Did you still socialize and bond with your classmates?

- I'm a lot better at intellectual/cerebral types of work and being creative rather than completing routine physical tasks. I'm concerned that nursing school and the profession of nursing may not be the best for me...is this a valid concern?

- Do you feel that your job is dangerous?

I'd really appreciate responses to any or all questions...thanks!
