  1. Hi, I am thinking of applying to a direct entry NP program to eventually work as a psychiatric np. I'm also considering other career paths including medical school. I am wondering what nursing school and NP school are really like. For those who have been through it...did you have a good experience? Since a lot of students in NP programs work part-time while pursuing their masters, is there still commraderie/ socializing within the class? Did you feel like you had good mentors and recieved good training to function as an NP? Also...do you feel that you are respected by your patients and by doctors/other medical staff?
  2. Hello! I am considering applying to direct entry PMHNP programs and would like more information on the career. I haven't been able to find any psychiatric nurse practitioners to shadow, so I'm hoping someone currently working as a PMHNP can answer my questions. - What settings do PMHNP's typically work in? Searching online, alot of the job listings seem to be in community mental health settings or inpatient facilities. Currently I work in an academic medical center in research, and I really like this setting. Are jobs readily available for PMHNP's in this setting? - Do you find that your work allows for creativity? Or does it tend to get routine/repetitive over time? - Do you have positive relationships with your coworkers (I enjoy a cooperative team environment)? Is the job isolating at all? Is there any tension given the hierarchy in the medical field? - During school: Was there a sense of community in your NP program? I know in some programs the coursework can be completed part time or online, and also people come into this career path from all different backgrounds. Did you still socialize and bond with your classmates? - I'm a lot better at intellectual/cerebral types of work and being creative rather than completing routine physical tasks. I'm concerned that nursing school and the profession of nursing may not be the best for me...is this a valid concern? - Do you feel that your job is dangerous? I'd really appreciate responses to any or all questions...thanks!
