Hello Nurses!!!!

HELPPPPPPPP!!!

I am in desperate need of guidance. I have been out of full time work for 4 yrs. I have a drive to continue school to become an FNP but I feel like I cannot get the 3 letters of recommendations for the brick and mortar schools so I'm left with the online schools, Chamberlain, University of Phoenix, Keiser, Kaplan, South University, and so on. A couple of questions...are they all fairly equal as long as they are accredited? Which one did you go to and why? Any problems getting a job after graduating? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ooooooooohhhh gotcha thanks for the clarity. I've heard the whole it's hard to get preceptors but nobody has ever explained why.

Even more evidence as to why you should choose a reputable program that will help set up your clinicals and has relationships with preceptors. I think it's unethical for any program to take your money, and then leave you twisting in the wind and unable to graduate (or forced to change your track) cause you can't find preceptors.

When people say lax admission standards are they referring to GRE? I think the GRE is going to phased out across all professions here soon as it is a standardized test that not applicable to the actual profession. I think nurse certifications related to the speciality of np like CCRN for Acute care np should be the standard for admission into a np program. Plus it puts more control and emphasis on nurse specific experience and we control the educational standards as a profession it parallels medicine (the mcat). With enough studying anyone can score well on the GRE. It doesn't matter where you go. The patient is not going to care if you went to Harvard or South. All they care about it is if you have the knowledge and the sense(emphasis on sense because that cannot be taught) to be to a great provider.

I am about to graduate from Kaplan's post-masters FNP program in 6 weeks. Those of you that are talking trash about for-profit schools really have no idea what you're talking about. They are convenient and don't require the same ridiculous busy work that many brick and mortar schools require, and I'm okay with that. What you really need to ensure is that your school is accredited. If they are not, then you are wasting your money. No matter what school you go to it is about what you put into it. Having an instructor standing in front of the room does not guarantee that you're going to have the best education. Even traditional schools are often requiring people to find their own preceptors, its not unusual.

Amen!!! Well said. Finally someone mentions all that bs fluff classes that are just to make extra $ off students. All school are for profit they just make $ different ways. The brick-and-mortar high horse is for resume glitter I assume. Even some brick-and-mortar programs make you find your own preceptor. Congratulations and much success :)
