Hello all,

So I got into an FNP program for the Spring but I'm still undecided if it is something I actually want to pursue. I have a non NP MSN already and it has not helped me much in my career but maybe because it was in an area I did not really enjoy. The NP role really does interest me but I just wonder how hard it is to find a good job in this role and if its worth all the years of school and cost of tuition. I used to hate being a nurse and have now learned to enjoy it more although I do still have bad days. I have heard many NPs that do actually like their new role a lot more than their role as a bedside nurse so I am still torn. Any advice you could give me to help me make my decision would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

In California, it is difficult to find a job and pay it the same as a RN

I am okay having the same pay but yeah the thought of getting another degree to not find a job as an NP would be difficult

I would never accept the same pay as an NP as a bedside RN. There is too much responsibility compared to the RN role. If the monetary benefit isn't there, especially since you'll be tacking on a lot in tuition(presumably), I wouldn't go for it if you aren't sure.

I am just tired of all the politics at my job now. I just want a career that I could be happier in. Does the responsibility make your job seem more stressful?

I might have misled with my response, but I haven't graduated yet! I was just saying that for me, I will not be accepting an NP job for RN pay. Any NP I have spoken to in person about this wouldn't either. I feel like there has to be something given in return. The role itself is what drives me the most to do this, but I feel like there needs to be a financial trade-off too. I have heard the nursing/medical politics also do not leave, even if you advance your degree from bedside nursing.

What type of NP program are you in?
