Specializes in Critical Care.

Hi all,

What are some medical-based specialties that FNPs can pursue aside from primary care? I have heard of FNPs in the emergency room/urgent care settings.

I'm looking to practice in California and suspect this is state-specific. Thanks!

Specializes in Cardiac, Home Health, Primary Care.

I'm in Arkansas and there are FNP's in urgent cares, emergency rooms, cardiology offices, etc.

I've seen job postings for endo, ortho, and surgery centers too.

As you said it is likely state specific. And in my state there is only one PA school as that likely makes a difference also.

Specializes in Critical Care.

I've heard a lot back and forth about which subspecialties are open for FNP's versus ACNP's, especially in CA where policies are restrictive. It's good to hear that those positions are available to FNPs in other parts of the country. Thanks for your response.

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

I'm a FNP and I work in Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology. I see both adults and kids, so having the FNP credential was imperative for this job. I did work for 3 years in primary care, and that helped me figure out what I really enjoyed (derm, gyn, allergy, neuro, rheum) and what I didn't love (GI, cardiology, ortho, endocrine). I also work per diem in Urgent Care, just to keep my skills current. I've seen lots of job postings for NPs in specialty practices, so I know there are opportunities outside of primary care.
