Fall 2016 FNP Applications

Hi Sweetsmile,

How are your applications coming along? I just completed my application for UNC-W MSN FNP a couple of days ago. I have also applied at UNC - Chapel Hill for the MSN Adult Gero NP program and to the ECU DNP adult gero NP program (had my Skype interview this AM). I've been wondering the same thing. I'm not concerned about whether I can manage the coursework or if I will do well, but I would like to know where I rank in competitiveness.

My undergrad GPA is 3.82, graduating from ECU's RN-BSN program this past May. I have 22 years of nursing experience in a variety of out-patient settings: long-term care, home health care, ambulatory surgery, and in orthopedics, infectious disease, and gastroenterology clinics.

My GRE scores are 161 verbal, 187 Quant, and 4.0 writing

From what I've heard schools place a lot of emphasis on your writing sample or portfolio. When I went to info session at UNC Chapel Hill they mentioned that beginning with the applications for the Fall 2017 cohort they will be requiring that BSN coursework and any needed prerequisites be completed before you can apply. They also will not be requiring letters of reference, stating that they don't really provide new information on an applicant. They also do not do interviews, so there is a lot of emphasis placed on you resume and essays.

I don't have much information on the UNC-W program, as they didn't offer an information session, and when I asked them about one they said all the information was on the website.

Thanks for the response! Your GPA and experience are amazing...22 years?! Wow... I thought for the GRE the highest score per section was 170? But either way, very impressive...

I actually JUST submitted my UNC-W app about 30 mins ago! I've been working/tweaking my personal statement for months now...and finally decided to just bite the bullet and send in the application.

I ended up not applying to UNC Chapel Hill as their program was not online. I'll be living in the Charlotte area and felt that was a hefty commute...

Now we play the waiting game...Do you have any idea when UNC-W usually lets us know if we've been accepted? What's your top school?? :)

You're correct. My Quant score was 157...not 187. I was able to increase my score from 149 after about 3 months of intensive study...my verbal and writing scores remained the same.

From what I've read here UNCW makes notifications around May 1.

I actually was surprised to receive an acceptance letter from ECU to the adult gerontologic DNP program on Friday. My interview was just this past Wednesday and I was interviewed by one of the same professors as last year. Anyway, ECU was my top choice so I have accepted. I've already completed my FAFSA. I am just so excited! Last year I didn't receive my rejection letter until March 1. They must do rolling admissions.

Congrats on the acceptance to ECU! :) I hope that we all get into the schools of our first choice.... I've applied to the MSN - FNP programs at several different schools. I'll have 9 months of med surg experience by the time the programs start, GPA 3.77 overall/3.61 nursing. GRE scores werent too good except for writing (4.5), math 147, verbal 154.

I've already been accepted to Emory University in Atlanta and rejected from UVA.

Currently waiting to hear back from Columbia University in NYC, UCLA, UNC Chapel Hill, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (had my interview two weeks ago)

I actually got an email yesterday! I got in :) but it's bittersweet for me...basically, life happened and I am no longer located in North Carolina, but rather Virginia. I was originally under the assumption that I could do the program from Virginia, but after meeting with an advisor a few weeks ago I learned all students must reside in NC as they only have approved clinical sites in NC. So I'm afraid I'll have to decline - though I'm part of the full time program so not much help to you :/ Was hoping to talk to someone about hopefully deferring in case I can get down there in a year, but that's most likely not a possibility. Upset because I feel like I'm passing up an amazing opportunity oh well...that's life I suppose... Anyways..Sorry for the rant! Good luck!

I guess you're not close enough to the NC border to sneak back in for clinicals. Sorry that you won't be able to attend. It's such a stressful process to with all the work that goes into getting your application packet together, and then the waiting for decisions. Maybe you can find a school in Virginia? I think there is some benefit in knowing that you are an acceptable candidate and that you CAN get into a NP program. Good luck to you in the future!
