Subs - how often do you get called to work?

I'm moving to ME where the school districts are TINY and there are exactly zero openings for a school nurse within 30 miles of where I'll be living! Although it's still early and something could open up towards the end of this semester.

I'm thinking about subbing to get my foot in the door, but I can't really afford to not work at least 4 days a week. This district has 17 schools and about 7,000 students. Any subs in similar size districts who can tell me how often you are asked to work? I don't even know if this district has 1 nurse per school...

My tentative plan if something doesn't open up is to try subbing for a month or two, and if I'm not getting enough work, looking for a PRN hospital job to supplement or just going back to the hospital full-time (please don't make me! I love school nursing too much!!! ) What do you think?

How much you'll get to sub will depend on how many other subs there are among other things. When I subbed for a district with 30 schools I subbed an average of 2-3 days a week. Unless you happen to get a long term sub position I really wouldn't expect 4 days a week. Why don't you call their nurse director and just ask how often on average you could expect to sub? The thing with subbing is it's either feast or famine it seems. Good luck!
