Am 4 classes away from finishing, and have hit the proverbial brick wall. We are getting into some research stuff that absolutely makes no sense to me. Everything from here on out will be research based.Obviously I am going to have to drop out. Other colleges have programs that may be different, but they are 30,000 dollars. Not an option. So now what do I do? I was hoping to not be a floor nurse anymore- I absolutely ABHOR it. Obviously that wont change.I see all the jobs in my area that arent FLOOR nurses all want bsn's. So I guess I will be SOL. I am very upset that I wasted so much money on this. I guess I can cut my losses and walk away, but now what? Maybe try RHIT? something, anything to get away from patients and floor nursing? Any suggestions? Thanks:crying2:

You seem to be giving up way too easily. You only have 4 more classes to take. If I were you, I would try a little harder to pass those courses. Do whatever it takes.

Here are a few things to consider:

1. Hire a tutor to help with your classes.

2. Schedule regular meetings with your instructors to help you. Explain your problem and your fears and ask for their help.

3. Consider taking a break and learning some of the basis of research BEFORE you start taking these classes. They will be a little easier if you are already at least a little familiar with the subject matter.

Just because something is difficult, doesn't mean that you can't do it -- or that you should do it. Try. If you have gotten this far, you can probably succeed if you just try a little harder.

Thanks for reply. I do have an appt with instructor tomorrrow- an exit interview I would call it. But I am willing to see what she might have to say.

I just can't grasp the research/stats concept. These classes are accelerated- we only have 2 classes left, so I dont have time to even find a tutor. And my schedule at work leaves me no time to do anything meaningful- for example we have a ppt due friday- my hhours dictate I will not return home tonight until 1 am from 2 pm( the 88 hr shifts turn into 10 hr shifts, the 12 hrs turn into 14, etc... This weekend is my mandatory 12 sat and sun. thatt leaves me 1 day to work on the stuff. It is also shift work- we've had to work all 3 shifts in one week. I am extremely stressed out about the job, and to realize that I am going to fail this class(due to not even getting the concept) means I am stuck there even longer. It is making me sick- literally. I need to get out of floor nursing! That bsn was the only possible hope I had.

I didn't think stats/research would be a problem until I already "dove" in. There was no syllabus prior. I am amazed I had made it this far. But I am also 46 years old. maybe I just can't learn anymore.'

The prospect of staying a floor nurse is making me more sick every day, but any other nursing jobs are either office LPN's , or need to have BSN. I guess around here if you are an ASN you're only option is in a hospital. Tried a procedural area for 6 mos, and failed out of that miserably too. I do not do well with critical care.

I will see what the Professor has to say. It's just a shame to have to throw away money also.

Most schools allow you to re-take a class if you fail it once. Now that you know how hard it is ... can you make plans to re-take it -- but with the extra help you need this time?

Now that you know it is difficult, get your support systems in place FIRST, then start on those classes that scare you. If you are not willing to try again (this time, with the proper supports in place), then that's your choice. You will choose to quit. But you don't have to make that choice. You can choose to put the supports in place and try again if you want to. It's up to you.

If it were me, I wouldn't want to just walk away without trying a 2nd time. I wouldn't want to just waste the money I had already spent by not be willing to give it another try. But if you would rather say "good bye" to that money and all your previous efforts without putting up a fight, then that's your business.

Being that I've had a day to think about it, I will see what the instructor has to say. Maybe she would let me withdraw from the class and let me retake at a later date. My appt is at 11 am. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for "listening". This isn't a decision to be taken lightly. it's also hard to make good decisions when you are under duress.
