How to learn Hedis in order to apply for jobs

Specialties Quality Improvement

Updated:   Published

I recently read a lot about QI/QA on this forum, and this nursing specialty sounds so interesting. I really want to get away from the bedside care nursing. My friend recently got a job with healthcare insurance as a Utilization Review Nurse ( or something like that) and is very happy; she will also get full training. I just saw an ad in my area for Hedis Nurse Reviewer and Utilization Review Nurse; they want acute care experience ( which I do - 6 years of medical-surgical), and Hedi's knowledge is a preferred/big plus. I don't know anything about Hedis and am not sure if they will be willing to train me appropriately. I'm so confused if I should have applied for these jobs. The job of Hedis Nurse Reviewer involves traveling to Md/hospital offices, and I don't understand quite what I would be doing exactly.

Of those of you who work in that field- do you recommend reading certain books or getting specific certifications for these types of jobs? How do I learn Hedis before the job?

Hi All!

The agency I work for trains nurses in the New York City area and also has an online course that will be released in the first week of November 2015. hhttp://www.qualitystarstaffing.com/hedis.html

Quality Star is a bogus agency. A Google search turns up no references except for its own website. The Church Street address listed on their site is a mail drop "virtual office" - Google the address and the words "virtual office." Plus, QS has no phone number listed, which is rather strange for an "agency" that says it's been in business for 30 years. QS is obviously a scam designed to rip off for non-existent HEDIS training.

LPN with 20yrs experience, how do I qualify for a job doing chart review? Currently taking a course in medical/coding and billing.

Specializes in Cardiac surgery, Adult ED, HEDIS.

I totally am really interested in the field. I, too, have a lot of varied nursing experience & would love to use my experience & knowledge to learn another field of nursing.

Specializes in Home Health, Hospice, Med-Surg.

Just looked at the link. Is this legit? Does tell you how if the course will be live or a recording. No dates? I called and got what seemed to be a personal voicemail. What do you think?

DanielleR. I have attempted to contact your agency in regard to the online training with no response. The phone number does not even have a business voice message. I googled them and could only find a review on Yelp stating that they were a scam. Do you have a direct number since you work for them?

I just finished the training. I think they have a training every two months. It was recorded, not live. And I learned a lot. We also had quizzes and chart reviews to perform. I'm waiting to be placed in a position, God willing. I don't know the number, but the email was [email protected].

I think ink there are a few other pieces of training out there too.

I'm not sure how to use this forum. I came up here to look for all the HEDIS referrals I can find.

My trainer said if you have a lot of experience and are trained in coding, you should apply for positions. It was posted in our discussion on how to break into the field. She said to sell yourself and take the first position you can get. Then leverage that for a better position.

I took the course online.

Does anyone know about Core Measures and ACO measures? Is there a thread on these positions?

Has anyone taken training with HEDIS.works? They have online training; my boss has been using them to do staff training around HEDIS and some other things. I need to do an online training asap. Somebody help.

I'm interested in Hedi's nursing as well. I am especially interested in pursuing a position that will train as well. Any information you can forward to me would be especially helpful and appreciated!
