Limiting myself?

I have done my rotations through…NICU, ED, as a Paramedic, Med/Surg, Rehab, Surgical, L & D, Oncology….all in hospital and NONE of them have appealed to me, at all. I find myself drawn to General Practice nursing alongside GP's providing health education and treatment/Public Health arena. I just think prevention is better than cure, having worked as a Paramedic..I have seen how important it is keeping people OUT of hospital….do you think this type of career is limiting? There are literally hundreds of jobs in General Family Practices…I just don't know that if I were to change my mind..where I could go…I definately know I am not suited to the bedside…perhaps community? Any input? I know for sure I do NOT want to work bedside..it makes my skin crawl and I have utmost respect for those nurses who work the floor…I just can't do it…anyone been in the same position?

I think you should do whatever makes you happy :) Nursing is so versatile...working in the community doesn't make your job less than acute care, just different. I was considering this very thing myself because I work in the community now and will miss it! You get to bond with patients and see them grow and change. I work for an OB and will miss seeing the ladies go from non pregnant to new mom.

Also, the hours are more stable! However, if you ever might want to go for NP or CNS, a year or two of acute care might serve you well.
