when they know the reason for weight gain

Hi I was hoping to get some advice on how to deal with patients when they KNOW the reason they've gained weight (or can't lose weight) but they don't know what to do about it. For example, one was physically abused as a child & another uses weight as a (psychological & physical) defense/barrier. Any suggestions or good books to recommend (for me as well as them) I work in a "wellness" setting and don't have a strong background in psychology/psychiatry. Unfortunately most people know how to eat right & exercise, but something else is always stopping them....I am welcoming any responses, and I thank you in advance for any replies!

Perhaps therapy to treat the underlying issue would be more effective initially than attempting to deal with the consequences. That treatment may mean a number of different things, but chances are, even if they manage to lose the weight for a while, until they deal with the primary issues, they'll regain it.

Overeater's Anonymous is a great 12 step group that addresses the physical, emotional and spiriual issues related to weight and food issues.

agree with others users/abusers need to get a grip putting cause behind them

not liking what you are is heart rending but you can't quit until you until you have healed well enough to not need the crutch
