Psych unit for seniors..hospital owned...few questions...

Specialties Psychiatric

Published

I'm new to psych nursing and have been offered a position for a unit that is hospital based (15 beds) for patients 55 and older. I have no idea what to expect as far as what nursing skills - outside of documentation and medication administration I will be using...I know there are groups, etc. as w/most psych facilities..the shifts are 12 hrs, 3 days/wk so its a typical nursing schedule.

Is this like bedside nursing or less "hands-on" - all the hiring manager told me was this type of nursing isn't like other types of nursing...I don't know what he meant and have always had an interest in psych nursing so I didn't want to ask and him think I wasn't interested etc.

I've read some of the other posts here but most seem to be how to handle specific problems..I just want to know what I need to be prepared for initially.....he also asked me about certifications related to psych - which I don't have

Thanks for any and all guidance and advice!:yeah:
