University of Sioux Falls ABSN?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone, this is my first post (non-response post)! I have applied to a number of ABSNs and was accepted to a few so far, and I am planning on going to University of Sioux Falls. I was wondering if anyone has gone through their program, or if anyone has any ideas/opinions about it beyond the website (maybe you live in Sioux Falls and you know of its reputation, for example).

Also, in general, how can I evaluate the quality of one program over another? For example, are there any questions I should be asking about the program that most people don't think to ask?

Thank you so much!

Objective information about the quality of a pre-licensure program can easily be obtained from looking at two data points... selection ratio (# applied : # accepted) and NCLEX pass rates. There is some additional information that is used by accrediting agencies, but it isn't generally available for public access. You could also investigate the facilities that are used as clinical training sites. Other than that, it will be pretty much subjective information based upon student opinions ... which should be taken with a huge salt tablet.

In my state, interested persons can also review meeting minutes on the BON site - which record communications with nursing programs. It is a gold mine because this includes any faculty staffing issues, funding problems, etc. which would impact state approval. You may want to take a look at it and see what you can find.

IMO, don't be influenced by the well-known student 'gripe' forums such as those that rate specific instructors. It's a well-known fact.. people with an axe to grind are the ones most likely to post, so there is an overall negative bias.

Thank you for the reply! I looked at the NCLEX statistics and the BON website and found no worrisome information!

I have seen people mention that selection ratio is important, but to me it has always seemed like circumstantial evidence (i.e., there could be many reasons why a ratio is high or low). Is there something I'm missing?

I will be starting the accelerated nursing program at the university of Sioux Falls in January

It's nice to find a classmate on here!

I tried to direct message you but I can't because I haven't been a member long enough, haven't had enough posts, etc... but anyway! if you would be interested in adding me on Facebook or something let me know! it would be nice to try to start a Facebook group and get familiar with our class before January if possible since we are all about to spend a lot of time with each other for 15 months :)

I think making a Facebook group is a good idea. I haven't done that before, but if you know how to make one, I'll definitely join!

i will try to make one tonight or tomorrow, i will update you when it is done and tell you how to join! we will probably be the only members for a while until we find more classmates!

search for a group called "USF ABSN Class of 2016" the cover photo is a stethoscope

Hi, sorry I took so long to respond. I tried searching for it a few days ago and couldn't find it. Today I had the same problem, but then I did something (I don't know what) and it popped up! Thanks for making it :-)

do you know what the nclex pass rates are for USF? I am also wondering what their job placement rate is too. I understand that they are a fairly new school.

I did a Google search a while back and only found 2011 information, but their NCLEX passing rate was 94.7%. I guess they are new, because there was no data before 2011.

I also called the school a while back, and they said within 6 months, their job placement rate for 2013 was 98%. :-D
