Nutrition

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I need some feedback on the Nutrition course for my nursing prerequisite. I am taking Scientific Foundations of Nutrition.

I have never been great at science, but I think it's because I really didn't try and was always intimidated by it. I want to be a nurse more than anything so I have thrown myself into the science based courses. And I think I'm overdoing it.

I am taking notes on EVERYTHING. And I mean everything possible and I just don't see how I am going to be able to memorize it all. I spend about 6 hours a day on the material (and I have 3 other classes). I emailed the professor to see what I'm doing wrong (like if I am trying to memorize the whole dang book and I should only be focusing on certain areas) or if this class is supposed to be this difficult?

It's making me nervous to because I have heard horror stories about A&P, and if this class is this intense for me I don't know that I will make the cut for nursing school :(

Also, what parts of the nutrition class did you guys use going forward?

Carbs/Lipids/Etc and the foods that go with them and how much of each you should eat

OR

The way the body digests and absorbs them?

Or both? As far as retaining the material going forward, I want to be focusing more on what I will need to know in Nursing school and as a Nurse.

It sounds like you are stressing yourself out and going a bit overboard because of it.

Nutrition is generally a pretty easy-going class, and unless your college is different, you shouldn't need to spend 6 hours a day on it. Figure out the learning objectives and look at any powerpoints or lectures your professor offers. Use those to determine what areas of the chapter are most important. Don't sit there memorizing everything. Otherwise, you're going to waste time on things that don't even matter.

Also focus on understanding and rationalizing the information, not just memorizing. Why would certain things be the way they are? What functions do they complete and how does that inform the structure or the processes they are part of? If you can make sense of the information, you are more likely to continue to remember it and not need to spend so much time on it.

Watch youtube videos that discuss and teach the topics you are struggling with.

Finally, try to stay calm and stop stressing out. Stressing over this and freaking out isn't going to help you get an A in this class. It's only going to take up your time and energy and make you more likely to fail. This class is your time to figure out how to determine what information is most important and how to study and take notes effectively. All you can do is put in the effort to learn those things and learn the information. Everything else is out of your control, so there's no use in worrying about it.
