Nursing school criteria

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello pre-nursing community,

My grades and GPA are not as beautiful as most LBCC and CSULB criteria would like them them to be for nursing. I know how competitive it is to get into nursing school and every time I think about applying this March it gets me frustrated and hopeless. I wish I knew the things I know now two years ago.

First off for LBCC, my overall GPA is at a 3.3, and a 4.0 in my required science classes, BUT I had an F in Anatomy before which I have retaken and a W in Micro which I have also retaken and both got an A (I failed Anatomy and Withdraw Micro within 1 semester, it was a very bad year for me and I was taking 3 other classes with it).

Now, if I were to calculate my GPA for transferring to CSULB and trying to get into their nursing program, my overall GPA is 3.4, my required GE GPA is at a 3.5 and my required science GPA is at a 4.0, keeping in mind that my transcript would show 1F and 1W in the past for Anat and Micro. I have also not taken the TEAs yet.

I was wondering would that make me lose my chance in getting a spot first time around? Have anyone ever got accepted even though they screwed up a semester, but got better right afterwards? I know some of these answers are just sometimes unknown, but it somewhat helps to put out there.

Specializes in ICU.

Depends on what they look at on retakes. Some just replace the new with the old and some don't. You need to speak with the schools themselves.

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Your odds really just depend on the caliber of students that are also applying. Are you able to expand beyond Long Beach? At least CSULB is cool about retakes. I got in in 2011 (ended up going elsewhere) with Fs in anatomy and physiology from the same semester (been there!).

Be sure to knock that TEAS outta the park the first time around. There's a whole forum here about it, but I really liked the ATI manual.

As you stated, we can't predict your odds of getting in, but you do increase your odds when you apply to as many places as you'd consider.

Good luck!
