Nebraska Accelerated Programs--Avg GPA & Competitiveness

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi I have done a lot of research and been in touch with representatives from Methodist, Creighton, and UNMC. I will get my Bachelor's this Spring and will have an overall GPA around a 3.7 as long as I keep my grades up. My pre-req GPA is only at a 3.24 as of now. I am just wondering if there is anyone who has been accepted to UNMC, Methodist, Creighton and what their average GPA was and how competitive the programs are based on experience or what anyone has heard. I look forward to hearing feedback!

I was accepted to all three. I had a pre-req GPA of 3.6 plus 2 years of volunteer work at The Med Center. I wouldn't recommend Methodist for transfer students. Not that it's a bad school, it's just that the curriculum isn't set up for transfer students so you would have to complete another 3-4 years only take a class or two per semester. (I suppose that might work for you if you plan to go part time though) I don't believe Creighton is as competitive as it used to be. Good program, good reputation but VERY expensive as I'm sure you already know. From people I've talked to, UNMC seems to have just as good of a reputation as Creighton, but because it's much cheaper, it's more competitive. I believe Creighton also has a rolling application window. I'd recommend you look into Clarkson as well. They have many clinical rotations at the med center and isn't quite as expensive as Creighton, plus almost everyone gets accepted as long as you meet the requirements

Thank you for replying! I am looking into accelerated programs, but since UNMC's accelerated program does not start until May of every year I am also looking into their traditional program starting in the Fall, because with two years I would be done at the same time if I waited for the accelerated program. Do you happen to know anyone who has done an accelerated program at an of the schools? (Methodist, Creighton, UNMC) I work in an orthopedics clinic for Methodist and have volunteered in the past in the NICU as well as shadowing Nurses so I feel like I have good experience. I just worry about GPA and essays!

I went to a Catholic University in Washington DC area. Creighton is a good school, but no one is going to care whether you have your BSN from Creighton or UNMC. Not once has any employer cared or asked where I got my BSN. Unless you are talking Ivy League or maybe Hopkins, no one cares. They want to know if you will work nights and weekends. What are your long terms goals? If a BSN is enough then I cannot see where it matters. Also for grad school remember it will be hard to start grad school if you are working and paying off 50K in student loans. I have no idea of your financial status and for some cost isn't as important. I would apply to ALL of them and then you can see what options you have.

Your experience is great! I can't tell you for sure that you'll get accepted of course, but from the sounds of it, I think you have a good chance. Since I attend UNMC, I know a bit more about their admissions process than the other schools. From what I've heard, as long as you have above a 3.0 and have good experience (volunteer work is highly looked upon) you're a competitive applicant. I wish I could tell you more about the accelerated programs, but I don't know anyone in those programs unfortunately. Oh, and don't forget about the essay. From what I've heard, a strong essay is important as well. Good luck in wherever you end up!
