Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm kind of bummed out! I was so looking forward to taking this class as my last prerequisite and it isn't what I imagined!

I feel like I'm learning all this history and genetic stuff that has nothing to do with pathogens. I listen to the lectures on blackboard (online course) and just feel like I comatose in the middle of it. =/

And tips? Does it get better? Any interesting websites that may help me actually absorb this stuff?

On that note... I really really really hate chemistry. I do not see how this will benefit my nursing career. EVER. My chem lab is pointless, a waste of 3 hours, my professor is a raging nut and I'm convinced she has never taught college level (she talks down to us like ignorant high school students) and the lab does nothing to help me understand lecture.

Yeah.. I get the stuff but don't see why I need to learn it. They need to have a chemistry for allied health majors so we can learn practical applications for our jobs.

I took Microbiology last semester. It gets very interesting at the end of the semester when you will learn about antibiotics and what the pathogens do to the disgestive, respiratory and other systems. It is alot to absorb but I enjoyed it. Now, I am taking Chemistry which will be my last pre req. Blah.:bugeyes:..I would rather take Microbiology all over again. No one said its going to be easy. LOL

I also wanted to add that I think Chem will help in the future with Pharmacology and learning about fluids and electrolytes. IMO

Chem will help you in your future classes, but I know what you mean about taking classes that seem pointless. I had to take an ethics and values class and it was not what I thought it was going to be at all. I'm in the 5th week of micro and we have covered history, cell structures, microscopy, microbial metabolism and microbial growth (and control of) The teacher seems to like to make the class a wee more difficult than it needs to be, but I can see where it's beneficial to know this stuff. Towards the end of the semester we will be studying more in depth pathogens and the various systems they affect. I am excited to get to that point!

It will get better! I really enjoyed Micro as you do get to learn about all of the bacteria and how exactly they get you sick. Sooo much of what you will be doing in a hospital setting is based around the bacteria and viruses and how they respond to treatment (basically how to kill them). As for chem. I am taking it this semester as well-I saved it for the last because of the opposite reason, I did not want to do it! My prof. was actually saying that he teaches a class designed for the health professions but for some reason most nursing schools (I am trying to get into UT) listed basic chem. as a pre-req. Well-he called them and apparently they siad that they thought he was right-students should take the health chem. as it is more applicable! Aghh-I wish I had the option of taking that class. As it is now just try to get through it-I am sure it will help with applications such as electrolytes and such.

my advice: drop that class and take ocean county college's totally online microbiology course.

the professor is outstanding and is absolutely clinically oriented. he was a former assistant commissioner of health for new jersey and a director of microbiology from roche and has been all over the world fighting disease outbreaks. you will not fall asleep in his online course! he is perfect for pre-nursing students who want to learn about what infectious diseases their patients will carry. its all about the pathogens! he has won numerous awards for his online course design!

call the registration and records office at 732.255.0304. you can register now for biol 232 microbiology dl1 which runs in the spring 2008 quick term which is a ten week semester. it starts on thursday, february 26 and runs through wednesday, may 13, 2009.

you will not be sorry! i have never taken such an amazing course online.
