Keiser University/TEAS/Interview

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I've been attending Keiser university since January; enrolled in their Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, aka prerequisites, in hopes of getting accepted into the January Nursing core program. I took the TEAS version 6 test on Saturday and passed!! I was scheduled for my interview with the Director of Nursing on Tuesday. The seats for the January class filled up quickly with only 2 seats available and 20 applicants interviewing. I have a 3.7 GPA currently, hold an LPN license with 3.5 years of Nursing experience, and have great references. My question is, what could I possibly do or say that will give me an advantage or help me stick out from the rest? I really need this January seat. Any question or answers are welcome!

Well, first of all, congrats on getting this far!

Since there are two seats and 20 applicants being interviewed, your chances are 1:10! From the obvious point of view, I would say you have good chances of getting in: your GPA is high enough, you have a few years of relative experience and great references. I do, however, believe, the rest of the applicants are as impressive! So, to really stand out, I would not go into much about your relevant experience of an LPN. I know this may be a wild guess, but an educated guess, think about what all of the applicants may have in common. Once you know what that is, avoid bring it up at all costs. For example, if most of them are CNAs, or LPNs or anyone having experience in a medical field, do not make such an experience as a focal point. Yes, speak of it and somehow tie it in, but think of a unique quality that only you possess, that will give you a leg up in such a fierce competition! I know I may sound vague, but I hope you understand what I mean.

Just to give you an example, let's say you also used to be an educator, a teacher, a teaching assistant or a tutor, you can say that teaching experience will be a valuable asset to you as a nurse since you are well-equipped with teaching methods and will be able to skillfully educate your future patients and will be more prepared to advocate for them as well. I was accepted into the Nursing program, but start core in May.. Not what I was hoping for, but I'm officially a nursing student again. Since the TEAS 6 came out, the seats have been getting filled up very quickly.
