How to get a head-start in Organic/Bio. Chem. 102 class for Fall 08?

Hi all! :nuke:

I was wondering if anyone had any tips or ideas on how to get a head-start on a Fall Chemistry 102 class that is focused on organic & bio. chemistry. Everyone gave me such great tips on how to get a head-start in my Anatomy class for this fall, I just thought I'd get some advice on my upcoming Chem. class from the experts here at Allnurses. :D

I've gotten my Chem. textbooks for the class already and I'm trying to read them and make flashcards of things like the basic functional groups ect., but I'm feeling completely baffled and overwhelmed. I'm having a hard time with the text in general and I was wondering if anyone knew of any Organic (& Bio. ?) Chem. study 'helpers' like Cliff Notes or something. Should I just wait for the class to start and focus on Anatomy for now, or are there some things I could be focusing on in Chem. ?

Also, I'm really baffled by the the way Organic Chem. structure are drawn - just looking at all those hexagonal figures and jagged lines makes me terrified! I looked all over the internet and in the textbook and nothing seems to explain them (how to draw/read them). Does anyone have any tips on them? I totally understand Lewis structures by the way (I actually liked doing them in Chem. 101), if that matters somehow.

Sorry for the long-winded post and thanks in advance for any tips! :heartbeat:D

Doesn't anyone have any thoughts or tips? Please?! I would be really grateful! To the mods: Could I move this to the General nursing area to get more hits or would that be too off-topic? Thanks! :nuke:

Hi Maria895,

I just completed Org/Biochemisty in Spring 2008 and thankfully got an "A" for the class. I will say...it's not a gimme class and you could plan to spend more time on it because of all the math formulas that they will teach you throughout the class. Warning...there are many and you're not expected to already know them. But if you have a good professor, he will teach you well. I hope you do.

Before Fall gets here, if you want, you could spend spare time looking up some things that I found on every exam including the final. You'll be identifying chemical symbols and their charges, using approriate metric units and need to memorize the periodic table of elements/group #s and they'll talk to you about oxidation and reduction numbers. Also, memorize the Polyatomic ions and their formulas. I wish I would have known that they were going to only refer to elements in formulas/charges during class from day one and you will be expected to know both. You might glance briefly at "gas laws" and "determining pH" and looking at Electron Configuration Charts since these things you will cover in class and will seem like an old friend when you get to them.

Ok...hope this helps. I'm headed into Micro in Fall 2008 and I have no clue what I'm in for. We'll both do great in the fall and leave it far behind.

Much success to you this fall.
