HCC really screwed us big time!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just took the HESI entrance exam this weekend at HCC coleman and I am really angry about the test.

They put a brand new section on the test called: Critical Thinking. They never gave us any information on this new section when we are registering for it. The section was filled with questions like a patient is peeing blood and another is hallucinating because alcohol intoxication and two other not so important patients. So the question ask you which one is most important? well I never had any experience working in hospitals and not to mention the rest of the students taking that test, but I thought I will give it my best. I started to think if you don't get to the bloody pee patient she might die due to kidney failure, but what if the drunk moron start a rampage in the hospital or do something harmful to himself or others? You see what I am talking about? I can't believe they put a section full of these kind of questions. I don't have any problems with HCC before and I loved Dr. Schwartz's Biology class. But this really ****** me off, it made me felt like got picked on by a bully and I am powerless to fightback. I studied really hard, spend lots of time got good grades all other sections which are A&P, math, reading, grammar. (if this is the old test I won't have any problem to pass it at all!) I was wondering did the nursing school chair used his or her critical thinking before he or she decide to put it on the test????????

But ohhhh do I have something much better for you! When I was on the Critical Thinking section question 26, all of the sudden the entire computer testing system went hay-wire! all the computers froze and won't take any clicks on the answers. The IT guy called up monkeys at HESI asking what the heck is going on... well, after he log us out and back in again he says the problem should be gone, but noooooooooooooo computers still not taking anything!!!! so, they tell us we can't take the test anymore hahahahahaha(sarcasim) and we have to sign our name on a piece of paper so they can contact us later... don't know what's gonna happen now. This is really messed up. In all of its wisdom, HCC... sigh....:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Specializes in ICU.

Sorry, that does seem really frustrating. Both the new testing format and the computer problems. I wouldn't be happy about that either

Thank you! I have more to say. The testing center give very inconsistent information regarding the time limit. It says you have 4 hours to finish the 5 section test, however I asked test proctor she says "oh, this test is not a timed test." Oh dear, I really start to wonder does education really make us smarter or dumber....

"JinJin," are you applying for Fall 2009? Do you need Pharmacology before you apply, or do they ask you to register for it after they have received your application? I know the deadline is already over on Wednesday, but I was jw.

Thanks!

you need to submit your application by april 1st. (at least that's what ppl at office told me) no you don't need pharmacology before you apply, but you have to pass the class and score no less than 90 on the math test.

How frustrating if they didn't tell you critical thinking was part of the test. I also took the HESI (in January). Critical thinking was also on our test, BUT my school does not look at your score on the critical thinking portion in regards to being accepted into the nursing program. They only calculate A&P, reading comprehension and math. I think that they only use the additional portions of the HESI (including critical thinking) as a "tiebreaker". So maybe yours is the same, I would check with nursing department or your advisor to find out.

nope nope, it says on the instructions. If you fail to meet any one section's requirement you have to take the entire test (all 5 sections) again before you sign up for pharmacology.

Wow that really sucks! Good luck... and keep your fingers crossed that you did ok on that section! :D

no I did not! because all the computer went crazy while I was on question 26. After that, it says my time was expired??!!! not the same according to HCC's own test proctor! but I can still click and I got a 690 on that section, but they need 750 to pass that section. I also did not have a chance to do my math section at all. But I did got a 93 on the first time. All I need this time is get better grade on grammar, which I did, almost a 90. But again, I don't think that score can count, thank to the server crash.

Are you sure they count the Critical Thinking portion in their acceptance decision? In my school, we took the critical thinking part, but it was only used in case they had 2 students with equal "points" (science grades, etc.) but different critical thinking scores. That said, I thought the critical thinking part was ridiculous. I'm going to school to LEARN how to make those kinds of decisions and I'm supposed to be able to answer questions about them NOW? They weren't just "common sense" questions. Most of them wanted you to be able to think and prioritize like a nurse.

Yes atomicwoman. Because we have to take pharmacology and pass the math test before we get in the program/nursing school. And we have to pass all five sections (including Critical Thinking) to BE ABLE to register for pharmacology. So, I am really angry and I believe this is unfair testing on the college's part.

JinJin,

I can hear your frustration. The good news...you'll be more prepared when you take the test again. I love the part when you refer to the "monkeys" at Hesi. Thanks for the laughter.
