Engineer turned EMT en route to nursing school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I feel the title speaks for itself, but I will try to give a little more depth.

I am 27, have all of my nursing pre-reqs, as I completed a lot of them as I was in engineering. I had a passion for the medical field and helping people, but it wasn't until I was a sophomore in college when my father unexpectedly passed from a PE that I really started to reflect on what I wanted out of life, as well as a great stable job and feeling rewarded. I didn't get that feeling from engineering, but I felt it pretty instantly after becoming an EMT.

I just missed the deadline for the Spring 2018, semester, which is fine. I'll get to take A&P 1 and 2 in spring and summer to get ready for Nursing school in the fall. I will be attending my local community college and obtaining my ADN. For a while I contemplated the PA route, but I wanted to focus more holistically, so I figured after getting my ADN and working, I could continue at my state college with their RN to BSN program, and then if I still have the itch to further my education and practice, I could take the NP route or CRNA route.

I went ahead and made an excel spreadsheet and if anyone would like to take a look at it and give any advice I'd gladly appreciate it! I can't seem to upload it on here, but I'd be glad to email it to anyone. Essentially, I'd finish the ADN in Spring 2019, and I'd start on the BSN in the Fall, finishing that up in Summer 2020. Then the FNP or ACNP route in Summer 2022.

It all keeps going, so there's no break, and I plan on working while doing it. I'm not too concerned about starting one right after the other right away, but if that were the case, that seems to be how I could do it.

When I was in engineering I had to take physics, calc 1,2, 3, all of the english and generals as everyone else. I haven't yet taken the TEAS, but I took a practice one and scored in the 90's in all sections. I feel pretty confident in my abilities on that test. Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated, though! Thanks!

You understand that you are not automatically getting into the ADN program on your timeline- right? That most community colleges have waitlists , and you cannot get on the waitlist until AFTER you complete pre-requisites.

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer- just a reality check.

I didn't take any offense, so no worries! You are trying to help and I appreciate that. I checked on my school's FAQ page, and there is no waitlist. Also, not sure how much is matters but I have a 3.8 GPA with honors at this college, and already an EMT. I feel confident in knocking my TEAS out of the park.. no question. I have all of the pre-reqs for this program. They have you take AP 1 in the first semester and AP 2 in the second semester of the program.

I would think it's a pre-req but it isn't. From my university I have all of my english, arts/humanities, math courses, so I'm pretty much just taking courses until it opens up for applying time. I have to schedule to take my TEAS, but other than that I don't see what else I should do. It says there's no waitlist and that everyone who applies is considered for acceptance.
