Do nursing schools look at courses that aren't pre-reqs?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi everyone!

I'm a junior at the University of Kentucky and a nutrition major. I've come to a recent breakthrough because I've finally figured out what I want to do with my life! I want to go to nursing school! I would like to apply for a second degree nursing program and I was wondering if nursing schools look at courses that aren't pre-reqs for admission. For example, at UK, organic chemistry is not a pre-req for their second degree program, so will they still look at my grades? I'm just curious. If anyone could give me any insight into this question or the admissions process in general, that would be great!

It usually depends on the school since every program has a different admissions requirements. I would call the different schools you are interested in & ask. Most schools are very upfront about the types of students they accept & the requirements they have. Good luck to you!

Well I'm actually starting the nursing program this Fall at UK! Basically you get an admission score they look at and base your decision on. Your admission score comes from your cumulative GPA and your science GPA in your pre-nursing classes (so bio 103, chem 103, Ana 109, Ana 110) combined. Your science GPA is 60% of your admission score and your cumulative GPA is the other 40%. They will not take the fact you took harder classes into consideration really sadly. I had a friend who accidentally took all the harder science courses than required and they just calculated her score and went on.
