Classes that will help me & be beneficial to me getting into a nursing program??

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello! I will be applying for my local state college nursing program for next yr (I could apply now but I honestly don't feel ready to take the NLN test again). So I have completed all of the classes that can be done before entering a program (all my pre-req's) except anatomy 2 & lab. That's my last class (I can take it in the program but I'd rather have it out of the way - will be taking that in fall). I would like to take a "filler" class during the summer to help bump up my g.p.a.

The way my school scores you for points that they look at for getting in is Anatomy 1 & lab (got a "B" in both) & Micro & lab (got a "B" & a "C") & than your NLN score. I have a total of 130 points (total) & my g.p.a. is 2.79. I will be re-taking the NLN next semester hoping to get a 130 or above (I got a 109).

Which class would you recommend that's not insanely hard (I will have a newborn) but will still look good on my resume of classes (I don't want them to think I just tried to get an "easy A" in something - which is what I would like lol!)Will be taking in the summer **Just to state again- I have taken all the classes for nursing program I'm allowed to take without being in the program**

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you

How many classes have you taken overall in order to have your current GPA?

I think you're looking in the wrong place to make yourself a more attractive applicant. You probably can't move the GPA much with one random class. You're much better off either retaking Micro and using the time to study for your NLN exam.

Just adding an A to your current GPA won't do much mathematically if you've taken more than just a few classes. Retaking Micro holds more value because not only are you increasing your GPA by adding (hopefully) two A's, but you're also replacing a B and a C. On top of that, most schools place a higher emphasis on the GPA you earned in your pre-reqs than they do on the non-pre-reqs GPA. Retaking Micro is going to be your best bang for the buck.

The other option would be to take a couple study courses for your NLN and knock that out of the park.

The only problem is my school won't let you retake any science classes if you made a C or higher on them or I totally would! I've asked before & they said no since I passed it. Total I've taken 18 classes (that includes the 3 pre-req classes I had to take to get into college level - you know those courses you can take when you first start if you don't get the passing grade u want on the pert? exam)

A's=3

B's=11

C's=4

*thank you for advice! I will definitely put my all into studying for the NLN - I also did a "GPA Calculator" our school as on the website & if I were to take a "filler" class & Anatomy 2 & lab before I apply next semester & HAVE to get A's in all that would bring my G.P.A to 2.97 so I wouldn't even make it to 3.0 so not sure if worth it like you said?

Have you taken intro to nutrition? If not, I would suggest that class.

Yes I have - off the list I've taken everything that is not a nursing class except a&p2 - thank you though :)

I would suggest a Medical Terminology course, Human Development, maybe a Math for Health Professions type class. Also, do you know what area you want to work in when you become a nurse? If you are interested in working with children, maybe take some Child Development courses. Good luck!

Chemistry and Biochem. If they are not required, find another school.
