Anyone taken the Kaplan

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Has anyone taken the Kaplan nursing entrance exam?

There isn't a lot of info on how to study for the exam? From what I have read on AN so far, the study guide isn't very useful.

I would love to hear others experience and advice for doing well on this exam! :-)

Specializes in ICU.

The math is all fractions and decimals so brush up on those. Science is ALL A and P... The study guide is helpful for the reading, it's a typical standardized reading test.. Read a passage, answer questions. The writing was ridiculous. I did poorly on it. It had subject/verb agreement, finding misused words, etc. I'm not even sure how I would study for it if I had to take it again.

Do a google search and look at different links (past the first page). I found a couple blogs with helpful information. One even had a couple of the science questions that were actually on the exam. Good luck!!

Thanks amd23. Did you find any word problems on the exam? Luckily I am taking A&PII this coming semester, so I am really going to try to get it down!

I have taken the Kaplan... ugh twice. The first time I used the study guide they provided (for 20 bucks!) and honestly it scared the crap out of me...but this test is NOT that hard. I bombed math the first time because I was studying all the stuff I didn't need. The first person to post is right, math is all fractions, decimals, a couple word problems, and conversions. Fairly simple stuff if you brush up on it a bit. The school I am applying to does not count the science portion unless you have an LPN because it is somewhat geared towards A&P with a little background on nursing practice...but if the school you are applying to includes that in grading I would definitely brush up on it a bit. I can tell you that the science portion has three questions in Cardiovascular, two in Immune System, four in Neurology, one in Gastrointestinal, one in Hematological System, one in Homeostasis, one in Renal System, four in Respiratory, one in Sensory, and two in Fluid and Electrolytes. I wish I remembered the questions, but I literally just started my condensed A&P1 & 2 course...so I had NO idea what they were asking back when I took the test. With basic knowledge that I remembered from high school I managed a 50% in that section. The reading section is super basic...read a passage and answer questions about it... I scored 100% in that section the second time...the study guide is good for that one. Don't pay attention to the crazy word part on the study guide where they show a ton of "analogies". Actually you can completely throw out Chapter Five where they cover spelling and vocab...none of that is on the actual test. Believe me, the first time I was studying for it I studied that like crazy because I was so worried... but none of that is actually on there. All in all, the entire test is pretty simple...it is set up just like the standardized test in high school. I studied way too much the first time on all of the stuff in the study guide thinking that it was going to be some crazy hard test, but in reality it's not that bad. The second time I got my math up and ended up with an 83% overall (they combine all the sections without science and then average it at the school I am applying to). I have heard that most people average in the 60-70s. My first attempt was 71% so I think that knowing what is on the test in important. The study guide is intimidating! Like you, I tried to research it before I took it the first time, but there was almost no information out there! I hope this helps! Also, the test was the same both times that I took it, so I don't think it is a random test like they sometimes do. Let me know if you have any other questions! GOOD LUCK!!

Thank you Nicoleo13 that does help!

Neurology was the hardest part of A&P I for me and I kind of didn't work as hard to learn that info! I guess I will need to review that a lot since there were so many questions on it!

Here's the thing I understand about the Kaplan, each school decides what type of test they want to administer. For example, for my school the science was all physiology, but my friend took it at another school and there was other science on it as well. The book helped me, but probably because part of my test anxiety is not knowing what to expect on a test. The math portion of the book did help, because it showed what to expect. My worst section (embarrassingly) was the physiology section - and I had just finished my physiology class with an A. The reading comprehension section is something you just can't study for - just read carefully and analyze each question.
