Any Columbia Basin College nursing students or hopefuls out there?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Just wondering if anyone else from CBC uses this website. I find so much information on here, but it would nice to be able to ask questions specific to my school's program! Thanks :D

Hi there! I'm a first year nursing student at CBC. I started checking out this website as a prenursing student and over half way through my first year in nursing school, I still find valuable information here. Are you applying to the CBC program?

Hi! Yes I have applied to the program and am just waiting for my letter. I go to church with Tina Etherington who is in the program now. I have asked her quite a few questions. How do you like the program? My sister in law went there, but it has been over 5 years now.

I sit right next to Tina! I think CBC has a great program...although I don't have anything to compare it to. But I've heard lots of great things about it and feel like I've learned so much since September. You definitely have to be disciplined and prepared to make a huge time commitment for this. I live 83 miles from the campus, so I spend nearly 3 hours a day in the car round-trip. What was your index score? Let me know when you get your letter! Good luck!

My index score is a 27.041. Do you think I will get in? What was your index score?! Wow, that is a huge commmitment. Like I said my sister in law was in the program, and both of my mom and my step mom are nurses. So I do have some idea of what the program will demand of me. I am very lucky to have an ideal situation where I live five minutes away and my husband and I have no children yet. I am sooo excited. I got some advice from Tina and I have ordered some medical terminology and some pharmacology math books so that I can learn some things ahead of time. I am also brushing up on my AP. Do you have any tips for me?

I honestly can't remember my exact score....it was in the 27's...funny how I don't remember it now...but when I was applying, I lived and breathed that index score....always trying to figure out how to get it higher! Yes, I'm sure the odds are in your favor with your score. :)

Tina's advice of studying medical terminology before you start this fall would be great! I can't believe that they don't require medical terminology as a pre-req. I guess I figured they would be teaching a class on it when we got into the program.......nope. Some students had already taken it and I wish I would have!

I didn't prepare ahead of time with the pharm math and just studied it as the quarter went along and did fine. The book they had us use this year is called Dimensional Analysis, I think. We took Pharm math the first quarter only, but then have to take a test the first day back each quarter to make sure we can still calculate drug dosages. So it's important to stay current on knowing how to do that. I'll be studying that again over spring break for when the quarter starts again in April!

Purchase a stethoscope before they do the fundraiser sale the first couple of weeks of school (they'll tell you to wait to buy when at the soph class sale)....you'll want time to practice using it at home because you'll have a skills test within the first couple of weeks of the quarter. The students that had to wait for their stethoscope to arrive felt frustrated because they could only borrow a stethoscope to use during lab hours. You can find them online.....like stethoscope.com.....a lot of students have the Littman Cardiology III.

Yay! I love love love advice! Does it sound cocky of me to say that I plan on getting in? I just can't imagine with a 27 not getting in.

I can't believe they don't require a medical terminology class either! So you guys take your whole pharmocology math in one quarter and then you are done? Hmm, yea definitely important to have the self discipline to practice and review! From what I have seen about the math quizzes at the beginning of the quarter they are very common at most colleges. Tina told me 3 chances to get an 80. That doesn't seem too bad.

I planned on purchasing a stethoscope early on :) I am too much of a planner and I am so anxious to start I don't think I can resist myself. I am leaning towards the Littmann Classic II. Both my mom and my step mom are nurses so I made them both look at the descriptions and I think that one will be best. The Cardiology III is the holy grail of all stethoscopes!

Thank you so much for all of your input. If you have any more awesome tips or ideas for me please let me know. You can also find me on facebook through Tina's page.

I got my acceptance letter today! Thanks for all the advice :)
