Accelerated BSN/ MSN/ or two-year RN?

Hello everyone,

I just graduated and got a BS in something other than nursing, but realized after that I want to go back and be a nurse. I am interested in the accelerated nursing program and initial licensure MSN, but have seen that it is pretty competative. Does anyone know how competative the MSN programs are in Minnesota (U of M and Metro State) and if the program is extremely difficult? I am worried that if I pay to complete the prerequisites, that I won't get accepted into the program. I feel like I already "wasted" time by getting my BS in something other than nursing. I don't have the best overall GPA (3.0), but I REALLY don't want to get a two-year nursing degree. Does anyone know the best route to go if you didn't get your degree in nursing, but you know that's what you ultimately want to do?

OMG! I'm in the same boat you're in! I just got a BS in a non-nursing major too and want to go to nursing school. But I have no idea where to begin.

I've thought about applying for a Direct Entry MSN, which is a master's program for non-nursing graduates. It seems like a logical decision to me. Since I already have one BS, why not get a Master's rather than another BS? But the Accelerated BSN doesn't sound too bad either because I heard that it's only a 1-year program. I don't know...Let's hope somebody can give us some advice soon.

I am thinking the MSN is the best bet as well. I know the prereqs vary slightly, but I have yet to complete most of them. Have you completed your prereqs? I have also heard it is good to get experience in a patient care setting. I am currently working full-time, so it's going to be difficult to complete the prereqs, gain healthcare experience, and apply to the program. But if I think I can get in.. I will do whatever it takes. I just want to know how difficult it is to get in. What did you get your degree in and what made you realize nursing is for you?

I've been out of school for two years and work for an Oncology Data management group. I have a BS in a non-nursing science degree and thought it was stupid to go back to school just to get another bachelors but then again, how can you know for certain what specialty you want to spend 3 years of your life on when you're not even a nurse. The accelerated program is looking better and better because you get the work experience, it's shorter, and there seems to be more masters opportunities for those who are already RNs. I would rather work as a nurse after a year and not make such a commitment as in a 3 year program.
