Future FNP...wanting to find job now

Has anyone had any luck landing a job as an RN where you could transition into an NP role upon graduation? I have taken resumes to offices as cold contacts to let them know I am interested in servicing their office. So far, no luck. I have also called and emailed these offices and the office managers so far have been very friendly letting me know they will keep my resume on file for future openings and thank me for being interested in their practice. Any other advice on landing a job that will make it easier when I graduate. I am still nearly 2 years from graduation so I've got time.

From what I have seen, organizations are not too keen on putting the time/ money into training an RN just to have him or her leave the position in 1-2 years (even for an FNP role in the same office) and then have to find/ retrain another key office person. I think those students who are already working in an office setting that they know they want to stay in, and have the support of the office for going back to school, will most likely be successful in that kind of move. But for someone on the outside trying to get in, not so much.

I really think that you will have the most luck when you get into your clinicals. Pick sites that you are interested in and would consider staying in, show up prepared, and do excellent work. Once you have developed that relationship with the providers and office staff, you can make a case for trying to get them to keep you : ) You will already be familiar with their patients, the medical record process, etc. Many of the graduating NPs in my class are in talks for positions that resulted form their clinical rotations.

Another option is to try to get in as an employee with a bigger medical system that might have inpatient and outpatient services, and bid on jobs as they become open once you are finished with school.

Good luck to you!
