TO be a CRNA....

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Hi, I'm new to the site, actually, I'm new to nursing. I start my nursing program in January. I have a Bachelors in elem. ed and I'm starting the associates nursing program. My closest CRNA college will allow me to go there w/ a bachelors and an associates RN as long as I have a minor in some science field (I'm shooting for Biomedical sciences, I've got a few hours there already)...My question is, if I don't get into their program fairly quick, how many other programs throughout the nation allow these types of degrees or should I work the BSN angle also? I know I'm a long ways away, but I would rather plan ahead, than find out I've made a stupid mistake that will put me back a year or so....

Thanks! :wink2:

Head on over to http://www.aana.com and check out the accredited programs site. Look at each individual school entry requirements. Programs that offer a master's in science (rather than nursing) may accept a BS plus ADN in nursing.

The stickies on top of this forum and the regular CRNA forum also have some great info, along with doing a search on this topic. It's been discussed not too long ago.

I mean even when you do graduate you have to get at least a year ICU anyway. So in that year start taking a few BSN classes on line. Just 2 maybe. That way if you dont get in you are already working on that BSN tract.

Nitecap, I planned to do that, but I need just a few hours for the minor in BMS (which I was going to take in that year) and then start the BSN. I worst scenario is that I'll finish the Minor, then find out that I can't get into my closest CRNA college and have to do the BSN...I wanted to just get the BSN now, there are a few colleges I could go to instead of the ASN but it just doesn't seem to happen (can't get into the 1 and timing off on the other, got accepted to a ASN program and don't want to wait...). Thought about transfering at some point, but afraid some of my classes won't transfer over, or I'll have to wait a year to get into their fall/spring rotation...Decisions, decisions....

Thanks Jenniek about the info on the site...I'll be looking there for more!

Specializes in CVICU, CCRN, now SRNA.

I would use your bachelor's degree for all it's worth. Like you, I have a BA in the humanities and I'm now in an accelerated BSN program. I'll have the RN and the BSN in 1 year of full-time school--less time than most ADN programs. After graduation I'll focus on ICU learning, CCRN, prep grad courses, etc, rather than RN-BSN. Those of us with a prior degree should take advantage of that work we've already done!

Best of luck.

Thanks for your advice...Goodluck to you! It just can't get here fast enough, I've been working toward this forever it seems....Oh well, good things come to those who wait...right??
