NY officials rescind mandatory flu shot order
I'm in missouri, my employer is mandating the seasonal and the H1N1 vaccinines...If we (nurses) refuse to take them, they are reserving the right to 'put us in non-direct patient care areas' and if there isn't enough positions in those areas, they will make us stay home with no pay other than using our vacation days...I'm not taking it...Waiting to see what happens!

Wages: RN vs. NP??
StormanNorman, What rural areas are you talking about...I'm also in this perdicament. I'm starting my NP in August but live in Rural Missouri, might consider moving depending on the cost of living etc but a NP here makes just $40/hr...and thats for a NP with 18 yrs experience....

CNS Questions
Hi guys! I have a few questions. I want to go on to masters level. I've been accepted to SLU's ACNP program (and I was going to get the FNP as a certificate) but my last 2 preceptors (FNP's) have warned me of problems within ACNP, billing etc. I do live in a small town and there are NO ACNP's in a 100 mile radius of where I live. So, my problem is this. I've been talking to advisors at the university I'm currently attending and they have recommended possibly doing the CNS/FNP dual enrollment. This satisfies that FNP requirement (my requirement in case I ever want to slow down (lol) and do family practice or urgent care or something outside of the hospital) [which is why I chose the ACNP in the first place] but I'm unsure about the CNS. About the only info I have about CNS is a diabetes specialist that I once met. I currently work in a Surgical ICU at a level I trauma center and I thought about specializing in Trauma. Can you guys give me some info to help me out in deciding whether CNS is right for me? Thanks, Dawn

Any SLU graduate school students out there?
Hi, I'm starting SLU ACNP/E program in the Fall, is there anyone out there that as already started or will start with me? I'm so excited, I got my class schedule the other day and if there are no problems, I'll graduate December 2012....!!!!! Anyone have any experience with their graduate school? Is SLU Hospital still paying tuition reimbursement and if so does anyone know if there is anything on the website about it? ANY info you have about SLU graduate programs would be greatly appreciated!

Urgent Care Setting
hours were 9 to 9 everyday but Christmas. if a pt was in the door by 9 pm, then they were seen, i remember staying there til after 1 am and having to be there the next day at 9am. We as nurses were TIRED and we had split up the jobs, 1 of us triaged, 1 was the provider nurse and did shots, procedures, lab draw, xrays etc and 1 (if we had a 3rd) was float and would load the rooms, call backs to patients, referrals, lab draws etc sometimes...I wouldn't have wanted to be a provider, they saw every patient...I know 2 of the providers told me that their bonus' weren't worth anything...they were unable to use their vacation days because sometthing about the bonus/vacation and if they took time off, they didn't get their bonus...unsure what that was all about. I also had a conversation with 1 of the FNP's who said tthat he was making less 15 years after he started than when he started...the providers usually worked 3 days a week (minimum) and somettimes they would call them in if the provider who was on had longer than a 4 hr wait...95 pts was horrible!!! That day we had 1 provider and 2 nurses, it was the day after christmas...Yuck!!! I'm also starting ACNP school with FNP certificate and I wouldn't take this ttype of job just out of college!!!!

Urgent Care Setting
I'm not a FNP but I did work in a Urgent Care setting and the FNP/PA's there saw anywhere from 35 to 95 patients a day. Thats 1 provider (FNP) and 2 to 3 nurses. We did inhouse CBC, UA, Glupoct, uHCG, hPylori, and monos and sent out all other labs. We sutured, did CXR, all extremity xrays, KUB's and sent out all others, did wound packing, ear flushing, multiple other things! The FNP's get a base pay and I ws told it is at $40.00/hr and then production for numbers and procedures only, not labs/xrays...Its very overwhelming for the provider. We had multiple providers of course and depending on their capabilities...Some got completely overwhelmed with the numbers and when we would have over 4 pts waiting (3 in rooms and 4 in waiting rm) they would worry more about upsetting ppl and it stresses them out, others can handle it well!! hope this helps!

ACNP's, are you hired by the hospital or by the physician?
Ok, I've been accepted to ACNP school. For ACNP's, are you hired by the hospital usually or by the physician that you're practicing under or could it be either. I'm looking at possibly a trauma specialty/ED interest...but again, haven't even started school yet so...Appreciate any comments!
