I thought travelers were guaranteed their hours and therefore their pay....I don't know much about the job but would like to learn more...
  2. I just started with Crown, tell me more about problems with them, I don't want to get in a big mess....
  3. I'm in missouri, my employer is mandating the seasonal and the H1N1 vaccinines...If we (nurses) refuse to take them, they are reserving the right to 'put us in non-direct patient care areas' and if there isn't enough positions in those areas, they will make us stay home with no pay other than using our vacation days...I'm not taking it...Waiting to see what happens!
  4. If you're capable of relocating, go to ozarksmedicalcenter.com and coxhealth.com. They are both hiring LPN's.
  5. Congratulations...We are in different programs but there are a lot of classes that are the same...I'm in the ACNP/e program and want to do the FNP certificate....Maybe we will some of the same classes and we can study together!! If you want to PM me...
  6. 1. St. Louis University 2. MSN-ACNP/educator with plans for FNP certificate 3. FT, 3 12's in SICU 4. Part time for 1st semester and then we'll see... 5. I'm scared to death!!!
  7. StormanNorman, What rural areas are you talking about...I'm also in this perdicament. I'm starting my NP in August but live in Rural Missouri, might consider moving depending on the cost of living etc but a NP here makes just $40/hr...and thats for a NP with 18 yrs experience....
  8. Hi, I took graduate Stats through Missouri State University, its an all online course, I believe its PSY 527 (yes a psych course) but it is accepted for both BSn and MSN...Easy, aced the class and I too hate math!
  9. Where in Missouri are you located? Are you willing to relocate? The facility that I work at (I graduated May 08) is still hiring and I'm sure is also hiring new grads and they have a wonderful intern program!
  10. Hi guys! I have a few questions. I want to go on to masters level. I've been accepted to SLU's ACNP program (and I was going to get the FNP as a certificate) but my last 2 preceptors (FNP's) have warned me of problems within ACNP, billing etc. I do live in a small town and there are NO ACNP's in a 100 mile radius of where I live. So, my problem is this. I've been talking to advisors at the university I'm currently attending and they have recommended possibly doing the CNS/FNP dual enrollment. This satisfies that FNP requirement (my requirement in case I ever want to slow down (lol) and do family practice or urgent care or something outside of the hospital) [which is why I chose the ACNP in the first place] but I'm unsure about the CNS. About the only info I have about CNS is a diabetes specialist that I once met. I currently work in a Surgical ICU at a level I trauma center and I thought about specializing in Trauma. Can you guys give me some info to help me out in deciding whether CNS is right for me? Thanks, Dawn
  11. Hi, I'm starting SLU ACNP/E program in the Fall, is there anyone out there that as already started or will start with me? I'm so excited, I got my class schedule the other day and if there are no problems, I'll graduate December 2012....!!!!! Anyone have any experience with their graduate school? Is SLU Hospital still paying tuition reimbursement and if so does anyone know if there is anything on the website about it? ANY info you have about SLU graduate programs would be greatly appreciated!
  12. hours were 9 to 9 everyday but Christmas. if a pt was in the door by 9 pm, then they were seen, i remember staying there til after 1 am and having to be there the next day at 9am. We as nurses were TIRED and we had split up the jobs, 1 of us triaged, 1 was the provider nurse and did shots, procedures, lab draw, xrays etc and 1 (if we had a 3rd) was float and would load the rooms, call backs to patients, referrals, lab draws etc sometimes...I wouldn't have wanted to be a provider, they saw every patient...I know 2 of the providers told me that their bonus' weren't worth anything...they were unable to use their vacation days because sometthing about the bonus/vacation and if they took time off, they didn't get their bonus...unsure what that was all about. I also had a conversation with 1 of the FNP's who said tthat he was making less 15 years after he started than when he started...the providers usually worked 3 days a week (minimum) and somettimes they would call them in if the provider who was on had longer than a 4 hr wait...95 pts was horrible!!! That day we had 1 provider and 2 nurses, it was the day after christmas...Yuck!!! I'm also starting ACNP school with FNP certificate and I wouldn't take this ttype of job just out of college!!!!
  13. I'm not a FNP but I did work in a Urgent Care setting and the FNP/PA's there saw anywhere from 35 to 95 patients a day. Thats 1 provider (FNP) and 2 to 3 nurses. We did inhouse CBC, UA, Glupoct, uHCG, hPylori, and monos and sent out all other labs. We sutured, did CXR, all extremity xrays, KUB's and sent out all others, did wound packing, ear flushing, multiple other things! The FNP's get a base pay and I ws told it is at $40.00/hr and then production for numbers and procedures only, not labs/xrays...Its very overwhelming for the provider. We had multiple providers of course and depending on their capabilities...Some got completely overwhelmed with the numbers and when we would have over 4 pts waiting (3 in rooms and 4 in waiting rm) they would worry more about upsetting ppl and it stresses them out, others can handle it well!! hope this helps!
  14. Ok, I've been accepted to ACNP school. For ACNP's, are you hired by the hospital usually or by the physician that you're practicing under or could it be either. I'm looking at possibly a trauma specialty/ED interest...but again, haven't even started school yet so...Appreciate any comments!
  15. Hi everyone, I've been accepted to start SLU's ACNP program in August. Could you tell me how the job is in your area and where you live. I realize that ACNP is more of a urban area type of job and I live in a very rural area of southern missouri....I'm willing to locate but just want to see where throughout the country the jobs are located... Thanks in advance!
  16. My indecision comes from an old job where I worked at an Urgent Care Clinic. I worked with FNP's and really liked working with them. Then once I graduated RN school, I started working in a NTICU then since then have transferred over to SICU. I really like the ICU but I also enjoyed the Urgent Care. I really don't want to limit myself to just one thing, right now I want ICU but what about in the future, will I want to 'slow down' and do primary practice or urgent care... For Ghillbert: what state do you work in that ACNP's jobs are prevalent...my area (southern, rural Missouri) there are NONE For NP Gilly: Where do you work that a SICU only hires ACNP's...and what do you do? I start in August 09 at SLU and I guess at this point (rather than reapplying for another program) is to start and complete the ACNP and then do the FNP certificate afterwards...At that point, I should be able to do both worlds as I want/need... Thanks guys for your advice! If anyone out there went to SLU, can you give me a headsup on the types of classes/clinicals, anything that would help me to plan for the next few years of my life...Looking forward to it but SCARED to death!!!
  17. I'm ok to transfer, my kids are grown and I would like to do some 'seeing the world'...but I guess it's fear...The FNP's that I know were like, you'll be ok since you're getting the FNP certification...which scares me, are they saying that because FNP is so diversified or because they don't want me to be ACNP or feel that it's wrong for me (job prospects or whatever...) I currently work in SICU so I know the ICU scene and enjoy it within this scope of practice and try to get my head in a room for anything above my level and enjoy watching and wishing I could do it...But....don't know...
  18. I've been accepted to ACNP school at SLU and I wanted to get the FNP certificate after graduation because some of my interests are out of the hospital and I think I would have the best of both worlds doing it that way...my question is this, should I go with FNP then ACNP or ACNP then FNP. I've got a couple of reasons...I'm scared that ACNP is harder and I'll have problems...I'll have troubles finding a job (been hearing that ACNP jobs are hard to come by)...FNP jobs are out there but I want more of the intensive/acute care/ER ...What do you think guys....??
  19. Thanks so much for the information! That is so much more than I already know. I want to bother my school but I don't start until August and I don't want to be a pain in the rear for every question I come up with. I know they will all be explained as I start. I don't actually know of any ACNP's at all. I just heard of the degree and in doing research, found that it's just what I'm looking for. Is there a list anywhere that lists ACNP by city/state etc...
  20. Hi all, I will start my ACNP program in August at St. Louis Univ. I'm really nervous, but a good nervous!! My question is this (and I realize all programs will have slightly different rules), when you do your clinicals, do you find an ACNP who is practicing in that specialty (whichever the class/semester needs) or do you follow an intensivist/MD... What if ACN Practitioners aren't very prevalent in my area (if I have to follow one of them)? Can anyone help out, I know there are various different types of clinicals in the various specialties for ACNP but I'm worried that I won't be able to find someone in each field if I'm limited to following an ACNP... Also, what types of specialties will I follow, again I know, each program is different but a variety of info will help me... Thanks for anyone who can help!
  21. Hi, I have a couple of questions: 1. Anyone out there enrolled in the St Louis Univ. ACNP program? I start in the fall and I'm really nervous!! A good nervous, scared of the course load, scared I won't be able to work etc...Share your information if you have any! 2. Anyone know any details of St. Louis University Hospitals tuition reimbursement program. Someone mentioned something about it but I can't find any details on their website. Something that with a contract, they would pay 1/3 of the tuition for grad school... 3. I've also heard of programs that will pay for your grad school if you will contract to work in underserved/indigent areas. Where can I find more information about this? I'm accepted to St. Louis University ACNP program and I just can't take loans out to pay (I have too many current student loans, be paying forever!) for it all and I sure can't afford to work and pay it that way, (got too many regular bills to pay, lol). I'd just like a little help paying for it! Thanks for all your help!
  22. I don't know, since I start in August, I haven't scheduled yet...What would you study to help?
  23. Hi, I just got accepted to SLU's ACNP program starting in August. I'm a 'reader' so is there any 'easy to read' study books that will help be become prepared or maybe ahead of the class...I don't think I really need the study for the exam type books, just things that will help me with first semester or whatever. I'm sooo excited! Thanks for your help in advance. Dawn
  24. Hmmm, VERY interesting! I'll have to check into that, I was wanting to do some traveling, but now that I'm accepted, I know I'll need to be more 'stable' and so a position at SLU hosp. might just be what I need...Thanks for the info!!
