looking for good, but cheap psych NP programs

Nursing Students Post Graduate

I have recently applied to UofA and ASU DNP psych programs (Arizona). UofA called me a few days ago to inform me that they canceled their psych DNP program due to low enrollment. I am surprised as I thought that psych NPs were in demand. I feel uncomfortable about letting my future career rest in the hands of only one school. Many distance schools don't have psych NP programs. I am trying to find low tuition as I don't want to go into debt. My boyfriend is in tons of debt from an old student loan..no fun at all. I also want the option not to work if things fall apart.

I've been reading a lot about USA here and its tuition appears low. Is it actually low or are there a bunch of stealthy fees? I found out that University of Utah considers Arizonans as in-state. I know very little about that university or program. New Mexico university charges in-state tuition for out-of-staters who take 6 or fewer credits. Their reputation is unknown to me.

Any other suggestions? I am really frustrated as I thought I was done with this.

Thanks so much for listening :loveya:

If considering MSN programs also, look at sinclair school of nursing Missouri - low tuition, great Dean (was my Dean @ Marquette and would only go to a great program, so for me her presence is proof enough...)

the NM MIND program is good, but you have to go there once per semester.

Thanks for your suggestion =). I will consider it if my first round of apps are rejected. (I'm already going nuts with the 2 apps which are due Feb 2nd. Fortunately Las Cruces, NM is a 6hour trek from me and right along the greyhound bus lane =) I'm glad that you have heard good things about it =) Anything in particular?

I have some information that may be helpful. If you live in the Phoenix area, I found a hospital that will pay for your tution , cannot remember the name I think St Luke, while you attend MSN, not nurse practitioner, at a class held at the hospital itself. They pay everything for employees to get their MSN.

Another option for you that may help is, and it's valid, The US ARMY will pay full tution, plus pay $1900 month, pay books, fees, and everything for nurses that have a BSN to go to Psych NP school. They will also do this for CRNA student. Those are the only 2 advance practice areas they will support. The NAVY will do the same for PA. I think you serve as a reservist during your schooling and after your schooling you do 1:1. You serve 1 year for every 1 year they supported your education.

Good luck. Hope this helps you, but if not you maybe someone can benefit.

Thank you for your suggestions =) My hospital helps to pay for MSNs as well, but well..i see what the CNLs do =P I really enjoy the Vet population (I did a student summer psychiatric RN externship)..but it would behoove me to serve them at the safety of the VA hospital =P

Did u end up applying for NMSU's online program? Have u heard anything from them yet?

I did apply and have not heard anything at all. I heard from ASU the middle of March (which I accepted), USA 3rd week of march, and nada from NMSU. If you are waiting for them, I would give them a call..or as many calls as it takes.

I have not received anything from NMSU. I applied to only one school so I am on pins and needles. Has anyone tried to call NMSU about their process and waiting time? I called last week....no answer... The website said we would be notified on or before 17 April! I was not aware that Arizona State University (ASU???) had an online PMHNP Program! Darn I found out too late!

Please post when/if you all hear from NMSU MIND Program.

Hi guys!!! Just found this site and see it's full of info!!!! I applied for the Psych NP program through the U of Iowa, but didn't make it in this year. 176 apps and only 12 were accepted. So, I'm pretty upset with myself that I didn't apply to other places. What do you think of Arizona State??? Is that feasible for me if I live in Minnesota???

I forgot to ask another question.....does anyone know about a Ped NP program where you can specialize in Genetics? It would need to be on-line as well.

Both ASU and UofA are distance programs. Their nursing programs are very respectable. Both programs require occasional travel for immersion sessions. AZ out of state can be very expensive. I would give USA (southern alabama) a look as well. I think USA also has spring admittance which is rare. I don't know about genetics.
