GRE-Are my scores good enough? HELP!

I just finished taking my GRE and got the following:
Verbal-550, Quantitative-500
The writing section has yet to be scored. It's the quantatative section that I am worried about. I've never been very good at math. I looked up how to interperet and a 500 wasn't very good. Did anyone get lower and still get into grad school?

I got a 950 or so combined on my GRE and still got into a Master's degree program in biology (this was in 1999-I'm a nurse now). I think it just depends on how much weight each individual school places on it.

It depends on the school. Some just require you take the exam, some have a minimum for entry into the program. I'd look at the schools you are interested in and go from there. 1000 seems to be a good baseline that schools require.

I got to speak to the person at Wayne State who could give me an answer on my scores (she was on vacation yesterday) and their minimum score was 800. So I have a good enough GRE score, now for the rest of the application. . . .

Sounds like you did well enough on the GRE to meet most school's requirements. I have spoken to grad schools all over the country and it sounds like a 500 on each section is a pretty universal number.

What grad program are you applying to?

I am taking the GRE next Tuesday -- yikes!!!!! This is the last part of my application process. I was orginially planning on starting grad school in January then I found out that I only could begin in September. So these past few weeks have been a whirlwind. I sent in my application last week.

I am applying to the oncology nurse practitioner program. I am really nervous about everything getting there on time and getting in this fall. Otherwise, I will have to wait until next year.

GRE math section for dummies (and I include myself!):

Plug in the answers. Start with C, since it's always the median. Sometimes then you can get a sense if the answer is lower or higher than that. This won't work on every question, but for those of us who are okay at geometry but absolutely hopeless at algebra, it got me a 670...and I am really hopeless at algebra...

depends on the school. call the admissions office of the school you are interested in and ask what are there requirements. You can get into a school with the scores you have. If it is a ivy league/very competitive school you really want to get into it would not hurt to call to get info before submitting your scores. Good luck!! :-)

I believe my scores were similar to yours and I got into grad school matter of fact I will be graduating this December :-) :balloons:

Thanks! I'm applying to Wayne State University in Detroit. It has a really good reputation in this area for having a great medical program. (RN, PA, NP, And MD) I found out that I only needed a combined score of 800. So that is at least OK. I could have went in Sept. but we had just decided that I was going to go and I wanted some time to get things in order. I have a tendancy to rush things and that sometimes gets a little sticky for me :) Good Luck on the GRE and your application process. I got an 1150 and got into BC's masters entry which is one of the top 20 programs in the US, so I'd say unless you felt like you didn't try your best or prepare hard enough, save yourself the trouble of taking it again and just concentrate on writing a killer essay and resume. Good luck

Thanks everyone for you words of encouragement. I found out earlier this week that I was accepted to WSU's masters program for the acute care nurse practitioner. I'm excited:yeah: and aprehensive :uhoh21: .
