Finding a APN preceptor for Graduate Clinical

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Why is it so difficult to find an APN who is willing to serve as a preceptor? They know what it is all about and they know a clinical experience needs to be done by all of us. This is so frustrating.

I posted a request for a preceptor in the online newsletter for Nurse Practitioners. I did get my preceptor, who is wonderful, from this posting.

I just wanted to reply to the OP. I think what makes it really difficult now is that NPs in many practices (at least IME) already see less patients daily than the docs, and having a student only slows them down more - especially a student who is in their first clinical rotation. It can be very hard for an NP to see their required amount of patients while also providing a decent clinical experience for a student; if the NP starts to see less patients due to the preceptorship, then the practice manager might suggest that the NP no longer accept students. Unfortunately, seeing a high number of patients in a smaller block of time is what generates more money for a practice - so if a HCP is slowed down by a student - well, you can see what the most likely outcome will be. The student would be first to go.

I live in a relatively small town, and was scared to death of getting a preceptor... but I went cold turkey, just went to the offices and asked and I was accepted by the first one.. (for next semester).. now I just have to pass this one to get there!!! I was very blessed........ am thankful!!!

Hi RN4JC,

How do you post a request for a preceptor in the online newsletter for Nurse Practitioners?

I am an F.N.P. student at Cal State LA who is looking for a preceptor for the Spring Quarter anywhere around the Los Angeles area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi,

I looked up their website on the internet and emailed them. There must be a group in your area and you can click on the "contact us" link that most have. Then email them your request. They will want to know a little bit about you and what are you are interested in finding a preceptor for. Good luck and have fun. I have had great preceptors and great clinical experiences.

Thanks for the info!

Read some of the previous posts, and like many others, I am desperately seeking a clinical site to do two more rotations (Adult and Family), as a student NP. I never realized it would be this difficult to find an approved site. I have personally approached NPs, emailed, telephoned and written them, to no avail.

I've become a member of the FL council for FNPs, and several people have responded, but without result.

If anybody out there knows of a Family NP who is willing to precept me, please contact me at 954-776-5845, or on my cell phone at 954-326-7015. Or send me a reply on this site, or at [email protected].

Thank you!
