Does anyone use Marsh for liability coverage?

by mom2cka

Does anyone use Marsh for their liability coverage? I'm trying to get a quote from them for NP student coverage and it was $92 for 3 years - but that seems outrageous, considering the $150-300 annual quotes I received from the others (NSO and CMF group). I find student coverage, 'other' student coverage, nurse coverage - but not specifically NP student coverage. Can anyone share their experience with this company?

Thank you!

I have my insurance through them (psych CNS), but haven't had occasion to use it (thank goodness!)

I use them as well. I found that their rates are least expensive compared to NSO and CM&F for the same amount of coverage. Also be aware that Marsh offers a 10% discount in premium to ANA and AACN (Amer Assoc of Crit Care Nurs) members.

Our school would only accept Marsh for our ADN program and as I'm getting ready to start online BSN program I called to verify they would cover me the way I wanted, also wondered how they were so cheap so I just asked. Rep told me that they consider student insurance "safer" because in most cases they can pay the claim and then turn around and sue the instructor's isurance for whatever happened blaming it on negligence of the instructor. She was very straightforward and said they win 90% of time. Kind of dirty, but worked in insurance for a while and unfortunately is the same across the board. LOL, why I got out of insurance as quick as I could :-P

I have had their policy for years, but never had to use it. (Knock on wood.)

Perhaps the reason the "student" policy is so cheap is that it is designed for beginner-level students who are always under the supervision of someone else who can be sued. It may not be desgned for graduate students who may not be as closely supervised during their practicums. That would be consistent with what heartnurse2be wrote.

Perhaps you should consider going in at a "higher level" as you will not be functioning as a beginner-level nursing student. You might want to call them about that.

I can't agree more - for the higher levels when much of your work would be independent I would clarify exactly the settings for which their coverage is valid. I now have two policies which had to be separate to cover my working time and then my clinical time. Better to take the time to look into and maybe pay more now than risk the consequences of being underinsured or worse yet not covered in your particular situation.
