Creighton DNP

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hello!

I am looking into graduate schools for BSN-DNP and Family Nurse Practitioner track. I was hoping that some of you may be able to provide me with more information regarding Creighton's DNP program - pros and cons. One thing I have very nervous about it that they do not help with clinical site placements - does anyone have more information or advice on this? I also have never done online courses so it will be a new dynamic. Any and all information is appreciated!

I just applied for the fall 2017 start of BSN-DNP too although the NNP track. I'm nervous about being able to work .9 and do my classes part time. I'm thinking of only doing 6 credits per semester though that would take forever for me to complete the program. This is the only school I applied to so I'm really nervous but hoping for the best! Any feedback on being able to juggle working full time and class would be appreciated!

Hey! Looks like we're in very similar boats! Sounds like I will find out for the FNP program admissions either Monday or Tuesday!!! I currently work 0.8 mostly to spend time with my toddler son. I plan to continue to work 0.8 until clinicals start to pick up and then drop down more as needed. I plan to complete the program part time as well! I've been out of school for 2ish years now. I'm nervous about juggling work, school, and being a mom. Do you have kids? I work in the OR so currently I'm working 4 8's plus on call time. My game plan: get off work at 3:15 work on homework until 4:15 play with my son and get house stuff done until 7:30 work on homework until 9 pm then weekends and days off work on homework during naps and when he's sleeping and anytime I can get alone time.. we'll see how I'll adjust.

I am working full-time while doing Creighton's DNP-NNP program part time. I'm currently in my 3rd semester and while it's been a bit tricky to balance school and work, it's still manageable. My program will take a total of 4 years to complete and I have about 6 credits each semester. The full-time program would have taken 3 years, so I figured that one more year was worth it to save my sanity a little bit! The only advice I have is to try to keep on top of your assignments and don't save things for the last minute. Also, use all of your time wisely; if you have some downtime on a night shift at work, try to get some homework done. It's definitely hard some times, but just remember that all of the hard work will be worth it in the end! Best of luck!

Thanks for your reply! What have you thought of Creightons program overall? How did you choose the program? Do you know anyone in the FNP program, if so what do they think? thanks! I agree that savings your sanity is well worth another year of work!

I think Creighton has a really good program and I've been impressed so far. I know someone from undergrad who is in the FNP program and we took the exact same classes the first two semesters. I think she is liking the program so far as well. I chose Creighton because it is fairly close to me and has a good reputation. Also, I liked that it was a completely online BSN to DNP program. I will have to go to campus for a skills lab for a couple days, but that's it. I looked into a program that would have had fairly regular on-campus classes and that would have been hard to manage with a full-time nursing schedule.

I agree that doing a regular in person program would be hard for someone trying to maintain working a nursing job. I was wondering if you could describe what format the classes are done (i.e. discussion boards, webinars, power points, etc.) I'm worried it will be a non user friendly format. I also am wondering if you've made it to the clinical portion of your schooling and how finding preceptors has been going?

So far it's mostly been listening to recorded lectures and taking weekly quizzes along with posting on discussion boards. Typically there have been powerpoint notes to go along with the recorded lectures so you can follow along and take notes. I find it all to be pretty user friendly so far. The online learning system they use has an app for your phone or tablet too so that is handy. I have not started clinicals yet but I will have to find my own preceptors. However, I know that at least for the neonatal program, our main instructor helps people find clinical placements a lot, so you're not completely on your own.

Well! It's official I'm accepted into Creighton's FNP program for Fall 2017!

Congratulations! I was accepted into the NNP program for Fall 2017 too!!

I got accepted to the DNP program spring 2018. I am undecided at the moment. It is like an investment. I just want to be sure it is right for me. I live in the PNW. Is there a lot of group project? How often do you have to go to the campus?

Hello! I am accepted into Creighton for the Fall 2017 and am currently on deferment until Fall 2018 because of a family member getting into an accident and needing care. Are you undecided about being an NP or unsure about Creighton? I can't tell you much about the classwork because I never started any, but I did go to orientation and can give you some information that we learned there. You are expected to be on campus at least once a semester, sometimes it's for a few days at a time (like the skills intensive). Wednesdays are considered your class day where you have proctored exams and online webinar classes so working Wednesdays does not work in this program (and if you work nights they recommend not working Tuesday nights). You find your own preceptors and they'll get the contracts, that seemed pretty non-neogotiable. If you are FNP then you HAVE TO do all your hours (except for in your final clinical course) in primary care (no ER or Urgent care). The exams are proctored on the computer and you have someone watch you via webcam and before you start the exam you have to show them your surroundings (seemed pretty hi-tech). There were over 100 people at orientation doing the various specialties... it felt a little uncomfortable actually. Let me know if you have anymore questions that you think I may be able to answer. Good luck!

thanks,

Jess
