2012 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Nursing Students Post Graduate

The MEPN deadline is less than 2 months away, so I thought I'd get a thread started for us 2012 hopefuls!

I'm a first time applicant to the WHNP/CNM specialty, and feel like I've been getting ready to submit this application for so long! I've been working abroad for a public health NGO for the past couple of years and am a trained birth doula. I've finished up all of my prereqs and GREs, selected people for recommendations (including a slightly awkward visit to my undergraduate advisor...), so now I'm just drafting my essays. Does anyone even know what the application is supposed to look like this year? I'm just going off samples I've seen from previous years.

Some days I feel sort of confident about my chances, and other days I feel as though this is a total shot in the dark and definitely not going to work out!

Any other hopefuls out there? And anyone know when the application is actually going to open?

OK MEPN's, I created the FB group. It's called UCSF MEPN 2012 so you can just search that directly now if you want :)

I can't find the fb group =/ Would you mind posting a link if possible? Thanks!

Thanks myelin! That was fast!

lol, it was funny, I was just looking to check something in this thread when you replied right as I refreshed the page. I even thought to myself while posting "omg I'm gonna look like some freak who stalks this thread constantly"... I swear, it was coincidental. lol.

Thank you magallanes! Hopefully they get back to us soon...

Does anyone have any advice for reapplication? I just found out that I am 8th alternate so am now wholly focused on next year. The weakest part of my application is in patient care. I have been volunteering at a clinic for the past 6 months, but my role there is limited to gretting patients, answering their questions about the clinic, scheduling appts and filing. To get more hands on experience, I am considering becoming a CNA. I've also looked at becoming a phlebotomist. Any thoughts? Any other ideas or suggestions for strengthening the clinical aspect of my application? Thanks for any input!

Tenaya - I am going to focus on the reapplication. I was considering retaking my GRE and possibly at least one prerequisite (mine are approaching the time frame). Are you able to ask the people you volunteer for if you could participate in my hands on interaction with the patients? What is your specialty? Good luck!

Fry123, I applied to FNP. I talked with the woman who runs the clinic where I volunteer and she is great, completely in my corner, so I'm hoping to get more patient interaction. I also plan to take a couple of courses. You know they've added Nutrition and Microbiology as requirements? I've had micro but it was long ago, so I'm looking into retaking that and haven't had nutrition so that's a must. Good luck!

Tenaya, I'm not a CNA but I'm sure being a CNA would help since you'd be working directly with patients and be able to spend time with a variety of patients with a variety of health issues. When I looked for volunteer opportunities, I specifically let volunteer offices know I was applying for nursing school and was looking for opportunities with direct patient contact. They were more than happy to help me out with that. I have a well-rounded background working with kids (therapy, counseling, teaching, volunteer, etc) which I think proved that Peds was a good fit for me. My GRE scores were not stellar and yet they accepted me... The mysteries of admissions...

Does anyone know how many people UCSF accepts for AGNP? Anyone accepted to AGNP?

Anyone received their financial aid info instructions in the mail yet?
