2012 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

The MEPN deadline is less than 2 months away, so I thought I'd get a thread started for us 2012 hopefuls!

I'm a first time applicant to the WHNP/CNM specialty, and feel like I've been getting ready to submit this application for so long! I've been working abroad for a public health NGO for the past couple of years and am a trained birth doula. I've finished up all of my prereqs and GREs, selected people for recommendations (including a slightly awkward visit to my undergraduate advisor...), so now I'm just drafting my essays. Does anyone even know what the application is supposed to look like this year? I'm just going off samples I've seen from previous years.

Some days I feel sort of confident about my chances, and other days I feel as though this is a total shot in the dark and definitely not going to work out!

Any other hopefuls out there? And anyone know when the application is actually going to open?

Thanks Myelin for asking all those questions and NurseOrange for answering. I had a lot of the same questions.

Has anyone else confirmed they are going to UCSF? Or is everyone waiting for financial aid info to pan out? I'm trying to fill out my FAFSA for UCSF, does anyone know if we will be considered graduate students? Because I know for some of the other programs we're considered undergrads.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be UCSF for me, but I'm sure I'll probably wait a week or so to make the commitment. For the FAFSA, I think we're grad students the whole time, but I'm not sure... anyone else know?

I just called the financial aid office at UCSF. They state to list graduate study for the FAFSA.

If you are like me and still considering accelerated BSN programs, then you want to indicate undergraduate study even if applying to direct-entry programs also so you don't limit your funding options. Then, if you do end up deciding to go to UCSF, you can change your application to indicate graduate study. Both UCSF and FAFSA customer service say the same thing. Hope this helps!

Thanks t_heart! I emailed them and they just responded with the same thing. Here's what they said:

You will be considered a graduate student at UCSF and will be processed as a graduate student by our office regardless of how you answer on the FAFSA.

If you are applying to other MEPN programs and they consider you to be an undergraduate student, you should apply through the FAFSA as an undergraduate student. If you do not apply as an undergraduate in those other programs, you could lose your chance for undergraduate awards.

NurseOrange - Thanks again for your help. Do you find that most students tend to live in the sunset area?

Hi everyone, I'm also in for the CNM/WHNP specialty. Congratulations to those of you who were accepted this year, and for those of you who didn't get in this time around, don't give up hope! I applied last year, and didn't get an interview, but used the rest of the year to gain more experience in the field and I'm really glad I did. Keep trying! If UCSF doesn't work out, there are many excellent programs out there for us second degree students!

Anyone else stressed out about how little time there is before school begins? I'm not sure if it is because I'm moving cross country, but I'm definitely freaking out (both in a good and bad way). Do we know the exact start date yet? I see that the Summer Session begins on 6/16, with classes starting on the 18th but I wasn't sure if those are the dates for all UCSF programs or if MEPN has its own special schedule. For those of you who will be moving from out of state, when do you think you will start looking for housing?

I just accepted my offer today - hope to meet some of you soon! Has anyone started a facebook group?

I tried to start a FB page, but to start a group I have to add friends! If you are in the 2012 cohort, send me a friend request, and then I'll be able to start the group. My name is Hannah Bronsky Pena.

I sent you a friend request :)

Specializes in FNP.

I emailed today trying to get an exact date when classes/orientation begins, here's my response:

To be safe, I'd avoid scheduling anything during the week of June 11th or later.

I wish I could give you exact dates, but we're working on expanding the orientation and we may need the flexibility.

I'm working with the Office of Admissions and the Registrar to get you and the other admits set up with access to the financial aid portal. We're hitting some snags, but that should be happening soon. I will also be sending out letters from the School of Nursing that contain some more useful information.

No dates on when those will be sent out though....ugh. The uncertainty begins!!! I just wanted to plan a little vacation before the madness ensued. I guess I will be conservative and quit my job a little earlier than anticipated.

Anyone else received any other or different info??

Hannah, just sent you a friend request, too!

sigh. At this point I'm thinking I want to be moved in by the end of May, if not earlier. This means I'll have to quit my job sooner than I thought, as well. I've pretty much decided on UCSF :) (although I do love Penn and think they have a great program, as well. Their pricetag seriously almost made me have a stroke).
