I am getting in over my head if I accept a job doing HRA's? While I am a new grad I can't believe this is too overly complicated or over my head. I've worked and an ER nurse for close to 3 years. Am I right is assuming the learning curve will just be coding? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

I just got a call to interview at UCSF for the float pool. The manager said they were scheduling 30 interviews over the next week.

]I am a new grad and have been an ER Tech for 4 years before I became a nurse. I have always been interested in the OR after shadowing a few surgeries and really like the team atmosphere. I've read a few threads on here discussing the pros and cons of a new grad beginning in the OR. I was recently called to interview for two operating teams as a new grad nurse!! The interview is next week. A couple of questions... Is this unusual that a new grad would be asked to join an OR team? What should I specifically ask about in an interview other than what primary role I will be hired to fill (scrub, circulator, etc.)? Thanks in advance for all the (hopefully) responses!

Is this program fairly competitive, or is it dependent on what position you're applying for? What is the reputation among nurses of Univ. of Iowa Hospital? I have an interview there in a couple weeks....

It's always good to know Spanish, but nothing was mentioned or spoken of it in my interview. I also was admitted to a specialty that is not offered this year. I would think this would be more important if you are in the FNP track but I sure wouldn't sweat it for your interview.... The languages I most run into my clinicals are Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Spanish... in that order.

Oh to look over the posts and relive all those emotions...from being denied, getting an interview.... and to being accepted! Best wishes for those who didn't get an interview... press on!! For those who do have an interview...begin sweating now!! Being a current "MEPN", and oh how I loathe the term, what follow are some of the questions I focused on for my interview, and they paid off! DO PRACTICE INTERVIEWS is the best bit of advice I can offer. The people who will interview you have a unique ability to read body language, and maybe even look into your soul! Yes, some of the questions are repeats of what you may have said in your goal statement, but do you think the people interviewing you REALLY read your whole application? DOUBT IT! They're busy enough with other things happening at UCSF, you are a very small small part of their task set for the day.....make an impression! I cannot take total credit for this list, I think I copied and adapted parts of it from another MEPN post somewhere. Here we go.....! Why did you pick your specialty for the MSN? What will you bring to the table for the MSN? (What skills/experiences will you bring to UCSF? How will you contribute to the class?) Why not Med School? Why don't you want to be a doctor? (At this point they will be looking for confidence, and they want to see that you definitely know this is the career for you. So have a great answer for the med school vs. nursing school) Why not PA? What have you done to prepare yourself for nursing school? (Talk about your volunteer work and research you did on the nursing profession here, not class work, everyone did that.) What qualities make a good RN? Why did you apply to UCSF? Do you like teamwork or to work on your own. (Say both, you like you to take personal responsibility for your actions and contribution, but enjoy what can be done in teams. Nursing is all about teamwork, with other nurses and the MDs, techs, NPS etc..) What do you know about the demands of this program? What do you do when you don't get along with the nurses on your floor? What do you do if you do not agree with the nurse who is precepting you? How will you keep yourself from burning out? How do you know when you're being a good nurse? Describe a situation where you've had to prioritize and organize a list of tasks What do you bring to the profession of nursing? What do you think the hardest thing about being a NP will be? How do you handle adversity/challenges? What do you think it will be like being in a master's program with people who have been working as nurses for years? How do you handle competition? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? Do you plan to do research or earn a PhD? What do you think will be the most difficult thing about being a nurse? How will you prioritize your day? Describe an ethical conflict that you’ve gone through Describe a frustrating experience at work and how you dealt with it Describe your strengths and weaknesses. How do you handle difference? Give an example.

Am I the only one who is feeling a little impatient of not knowing when and how long orientation will be?

I received a letter today. You all should get something in your boxes soon!

I emailed today trying to get an exact date when classes/orientation begins, here's my response: To be safe, I'd avoid scheduling anything during the week of June 11th or later. I wish I could give you exact dates, but we're working on expanding the orientation and we may need the flexibility. I'm working with the Office of Admissions and the Registrar to get you and the other admits set up with access to the financial aid portal. We're hitting some snags, but that should be happening soon. I will also be sending out letters from the School of Nursing that contain some more useful information. No dates on when those will be sent out though....ugh. The uncertainty begins!!! I just wanted to plan a little vacation before the madness ensued. I guess I will be conservative and quit my job a little earlier than anticipated. Anyone else received any other or different info??

What a mess...agreed. If you think you will have a job offer from a hospital around here (Bay area.... one of the few places in the world with BIG pay for RN's) and know no one in the industry to get your foot in the door, forget about it. Other places in California, not so bad from what I hear. As for the RN without a BSN, it really doesn't matter UNLESS you are trying to get a job at a hospital with Magnet status. The ER I work in (Oakland) has few new grad positions (around 2-4/year) and half of them in the past two years have an AA from one of the local community colleges. What they DID have was extensive work experience in the ER, if not the hospital setting. I would think you are crazy for trying to get a new nursing position (near the end of June 2013?? right) and then trying to start the master's portion shortly (~2 months!) when a new grad position takes at least a full-time position of 4-6 months of TRAINING, before you're even working on our own. Balancing that with school would be a mess, imo.

I just stared at the page that said "admitted" for ten minutes in disbelief. My heart hasn't pumped that hard for a long time without exerting myself!!! Congrats to all who've been accepted and best wishes for those who've been denied....I was there last year. Keep at it, it will happen!
