I just heard from a friend of mine that nurses have organized a "sick out" at a Philadelphia area hospital. She's not sure whether it's Holy Redeemer Hospital in Meadowbrook or St. Mary's Hospital in Langhorne. Anybody know anything about it? (I couldn't find any info. when I did a Google Search a few minutes ago.) I'm most interested to know whether it's Holy Redeemer since I used to work there and tried with others to organize a union a number of years ago without success.

I received a few more details from my friend yesterday and she says the sick out was organized by Med/Surg nurses at Holy Redeemer Hospital, Meadowbrook. They are apparently also trying to organize a union there (as I tried to 6-7 years ago). As far as I know, at least from doing a Google Search on the internet, it never made it to the news. (I don't read the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper, so don't know if there was an article written about it there.) I imagine the administration would want to keep the sick out -OUT- of the news.

Anyone out there with any more information would be appreciated.

I have not heard anything about this, but with staffing the way it is, I think we need a union.

WOW, I work and live near both of those-don't work at either. However, i hadn't heard anything about. Must not have been big news if it didn't hit the paper, interesting.

I left HRH 5 years ago because of poor working conditions. They couldn't keep nurses on that med-surg unit when I worked there, and from what I hear, it never got any better. Ratio was 6-7 pts. per nurse, no aides, start your own IV's, often, no unit clerk 3-11, and when I was there, LPN's couldn't do their own assesments, so RN's had to assess those pts. in addition to their own. The nurse who originally told me about this sick-out did affirm that her friend who works at Holy Redeemer said it occured. I guess only full-blown nursing strikes are deemed news-worthy.
