When did you first know Peds is for you?

Hi -

I am a new BSN student am considering Peds as my specialty. I don't have children, neices or nephews but I was myself sick a lot as a child and I have a soft spot for them because of my own experiences. Anyhow, when did you first realize Peds is for you? Do you think most Peds nurses are parents themselves? Will it be more difficult to relate to the parents of ill children when I don't have any kids myself?

Thanks for your thoughts!

J

I first became a peds nurse before my first child was born. Patients and parents did not really have a problem with me not having kids. You need to know that you are not just caring for a child though, you have the child, parents, grandparents. etc.. When a child is sick everyone is involved. Remember to be compassionate to the parent and understand their fears. The Child is the easy part. I love peds and wouldn't want to do anything else. Kids are great and are so greatful for everything. Good luck!!!!!!
