All Children's Hospital Residency Program Fall 2014

Hi All!

I am a senior nursing student and am looking to apply to the new graduate RN residency program at All Children's Hospital in St. Pete, FL for Fall 2014. I am hoping to get some advice from people who have done this program in the past or people who currently work there now. Also hoping to connect with people who plan on applying! This is my first post on this website, but I hear that it is a great place to find out lots of information about various nursing topics, so I am excited to see what this post generates!

:)

Hi Mac2014 -

I just applied! Do you know when we can expect to hear anything? I know the application was only open yesterday and today! I'm actually from Michigan, how about you? I just graduated on Saturday and hoping to take the N-CLEX the last week of June!

Hi Mac2014 and UMnurse310, I applied for the RN residency program as well and I haven't heard anything yet. I read on their website that you'll either get a phone call to schedule and interview or you'll get notified that you weren't selected. Has anyone been denied yet? Also, on their website they took down the interview fair dates, does this mean that they are no longer having the interview fair?

Hi ValerieKeyes and UMnurse310,

So glad there people replying to this thread! I have not heard anything (yes or no) regarding an interview. I do know that they will not be having the interview fair this time around because they will only be taking 5 people into this cohort :( I was pretty sad to hear that from the HR person I talked to. So as if the program wasn't competitive enough already, they are taking less people than usual on top of it! I wish they had dates as to when we will find out...I am getting anxious to hear! Crossing my fingers that it will be sometime this week. The HR person i talked to said that by the middle of June (at the latest) we would know if we got a position, so I feel like if that is the goal they should be notifying us soon! I also heard there will be phone interviews first, then based on that they will bring you down for an in person interview. But with them canceling the interview fair, i wonder if that is still the plan? Hope this information helps! I know hearing from others in the same boat as me always makes me feel a little better!

Where are you guys originally from? Do you live in the Florida area, or would you be relocating? I am from the Chicago area and went to school in Milwaukee. My family has had a condo in the Tampa area for almost 10 years, so Florida is like my second home. And after the winter we have had in the Midwest, I am ready for some sun and sand for sure!

Hi mac2014,

Wow, only 5 people...that's crazy! I can't believe it. When you called HR, was it easy to reach them and what types of questions did you ask them? I went to nursing school at Florida State University in Tallahassee and I'll be moving to Tampa by the end of may. It is about 4 hours south of Tallahassee. I'm from Florida and I love it here, you've just got to get use to the heat. Although Tampa doesn't get quite as hot as Tallahassee (the high this week here is 97 degrees!!) Where else are you going to apply to?

Hi ValerieKeyes!

I had been emailing back and forth with a woman from HR over the past few months and actually went on a hospital tour when I was in Florida for spring break. She pretty much just told me about the number of positions and what areas they would be hiring in. Unfortunately she didn't give me any dates of when they would be notifying us about interviews. I have an email into her that I sent Monday about how the process was going and if she had dates in mind, but she hasn't responded :( But if you go on the all children's website under the careers part they have all the HR recruiter contact information if you wanted to try and contact them! I'm hoping they give us some kind of information soon!

I have applied to other peds residency programs throughout the country. I'm ready for a new adventure so I pretty much applied to any peds residency programs I could find. But this one is one of my top choices! Have you applied anywhere else?

Hi Guys -

Wow! Crazy that they are only hiring 5 people!!! I applied for this residency on a whim, because I found out about it right before the application opened. I am originally from Michigan, attended the University of Michigan and am looking to go anywhere, as long as its a Children's Hospital!

I have also applied to Peds residencies in Texas (Dallas and Ft. Worth), Denver, Salt Lake City, Omaha, Atlanta and Detroit. I had an interview in Texas, but did not get the position. But I do have an interview in Detroit next week.

Fingers crossed for all if us!!

I emailed All Children's HR last week and it says they received and read my email but I haven't received a response yet. This was my number one choice so now I'm starting to apply to other hospitals in the Tampa/St. Pete area. I wonder how many people applied for All Children's residency program and what type of grades and experience they had. I wonder if I even have a chance

When I had talked to HR before they said they usually have about 150 applicants, look for people with peds experience as a CNA/intern/preceptorship etc., or even experiences with kids like babysitting, being a nanny, camp volunteer etc., and "well-rounded clinical experiences in other areas". Since I am applying from out of state, I asked if they look at in-state applicants first, and she said that they have been accepting candidates from out of state more and more each year. They also said that they have internal applicants, which they look at first. Not sure how many internal applicants there are though...I had emailed HR last week too requiring about dates. She replied that they had reviewed all applications and would notify people about interviews by June 30th...I am hoping that she meant to say "May 30th"? If you think about it, June 30th makes no sense, especially if they have already "reviewed all applications". I don't see the point in waiting over 1 month to notify people if they have already reviewed everybody's applications? They also have the deadline for FL licensure as July 28th, so if they notify (supposedly) by June 30th, that means July interviews, and I feel like then that would make the license deadline very close for people who do not have a FL license. Does this seem like a logical "typo" to anyone else, or am I just being too hopeful?!?!?! I tried emailing her back to clarify, but I never got a response....

I'm sure she meant to say May 30th. It doesn't make sense for them to sit around and do nothing for a month. I'm sure they want 2 or 3 weeks to be able to interview everyone and then another week or two to make their decisions and notify people if they are offering them a job.

Hearing all the information you have is making me feel better. I did 6 weeks of internship in the PICU and I've worked at preschools and summer camps so hopefully that makes me look good to them. I guess I've just got to keep my fingers crossed and wait for a phone call!

When are you taking your NCLEX? I've signed up for June 11th. Would you be close to the July 28th deadline after you take it and have it endorsed? I don't know much about the endorsement process since I'm staying in Florida.

Good! I'm glad someone else agrees with me about the date! It just makes no sense to wait..

Yeah! It sounds like you have a lot of great experience! I have some similar experiences as well. I had my senior preceptorship and general peds rotation both in the PICU and had a summer internship at a children's hospital. I have also done the babysitting/nanny deal and worked with kiddos in some of my other clinicals through school. I am crossing my fingers that it is enough! This is my number one choice as well...Hopefully by "MAY 30TH" we will be getting a call telling us one way or another!

That is my concern as well...I am scheduled for the same week as you to take my NCLEX. I am not sure how long the process takes to transfer. Plus, I don't want to transfer it until I know that I will be going there for sure. So I am hoping that I can get in contact with HR (hopefully sooner rather than later) to clarify...

What other hospitals have you been looking at?

I've also been looking at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa and Tampa General Hospital and some of the smaller hospitals throughout St. Pete and Tampa. Many of these hospitals do not have large pediatric floors or have few openings for residency programs.
