Switching positions in the hospital: Housekeeping to PCT. Has anyone switch job positions

I just got hired at the hospital being a housekeeper. I was told that in 6 months I could switch positions. I have been passing meds and doing caregiving for 2 years, but Im not certified for CNA. Im taking a CNA class right now and will be finish before 6 months. My question is, has everyone ever switch job positions in a hospital before? Im nervous because I dont know how long the process will be. I dont want to be a housekeeper for a year. I really want to get back to doing what's in my job field.

The best PCT I've ever worked with came from housekeeping. It isn't uncommon to move up or switch departments within a hospital as most facilities hire from within first!

Good luck! Work hard and get references. Go above and beyond every second you're there until you apply to change positions! Determination can get anyone anywhere :)

Switching jobs definately happens at a hospital. One of the CNAs on my unit started out as a housekeeper for the hospital, became a CNA and has worked for us all through nursing school, and as of this week he is interviewing for an RN position on another unit.

You're also talking about switching from an 'apple' position to an 'orange' position. HR just might APPROVE the switch early esp if there's a need for CNA/PCT staff. And if you've had a good demonstrated work record to fall back on, they just might give you a chance.

Good luck.

I will definitely look into that after I finish my CNA class. Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it.
